General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia, says he is ready to resign and forfeit his position if former President, John Dramani Mahama, ever said he will cancel government’s flagship programme, Free SHS, when he assumes office.

Denying that the former president made those comments, the outspoken politician dared the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) government to provide evidence to prove that Mahama truly has plans of scrapping the policy.

Mr Asiedu Nketia noted that if anyone can produce either an audio or video recording of Mahama saying that, he will with immediate effect, resign as the General Secretary of the party.

“if President Akufo-Addo or any other Ghanaian can produce a recording; either pictorial or vocal recording of President Mahama saying that he will cancel Free SHS when he comes to power and we test it as a genuine recording coming from the mouth of President Mahama, within 24 hours I’ll resign as the General Secretary of NDC. I’ve challenged them, let them bring it,” he said on PM Express on JoyNews.

Mr. Asiedu Nketia is of the view the current Akufo-Addo-led government is propagating lies to deter Ghanaians from voting Mahama into power come 2020 general elections.

He, however, revealed that the Free SHS programme has been met with a lot of challenges and will only take a competent team to bring the crisis to an end.

He indicated that the next NDC government will use 90 days to solve every Free SHS problem, build 100 schools within the 90 days and also scrap the double-track system.

“You don’t have enough spaces; both classrooms and sleeping accommodation places for all the students who are entitled to take advantage of the Free SHS. Because of this the government have been forced to institute a shift system which they call double track and this shift system has brought untold hardship to both parents and students...so no responsible government will want to keep the shift system as part of the Free SHS and that is what we want to change,” he added.
