The Attorney General, Godfred Dame, has called on the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, to comply with and respect the Supreme Court's decision regarding the declaration of four seats in Parliament vacant.
Addressing the media after the Supreme Court's verdict overruling Bagbin's decision, Dame stated that Bagbin had no option but to obey, stressing that the ruling was emphatic and left no room for argument or review, as it came from the highest court in the country.
"I expect the Speaker of Parliament to comply with the decision of the Supreme Court. I know him to be law-abiding," he said.
Dame further explained that court rulings are orders that must be respected and observed, regardless of whether the decision was made by a narrow majority.
"The court has spoken in very clear and emphatic terms, and the only thing anybody has to do is to respect the court's decision. That is the mark of a civilised democratic order. It leaves no room for any argument because it was a clear majority of 5 - 2.
"Whenever the court speaks, it's a clear and emphatic order. For anybody to refuse to comply with the order of the Supreme Court is non-negotiable," he said.
The Supreme Court, in a 5 - 2 majority ruling on November 12, 2024, overruled the Speaker's declaration of four seats vacant, describing it as unconstitutional.
Per the court's ruling, the four MPs whose seats were declared vacant must be reinstated.
