Former Member of Parliament for Manhyia North, Collins Amankwah, has levelled allegations against the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the Asante Akyem North parliamentary seat, currently held by embattled MP Ohene Kwame Frimpong, popularly known as OK Frimpong.

According to the former lawmaker, intelligence he has gathered suggests that the NDC is on a manhunt for a candidate to contest the Asante Akyem North seat as an independent candidate, with substantial financial backing from the party.

Collins Amankwah claimed that the alleged move is aimed at replacing OK Frimpong should he remain incarcerated, particularly because the constituency is widely regarded as a stronghold of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking about the situation, the former MP said the level of effort he expected the state to put into securing the release of OK Frimpong is not what he is seeing.

“The amount of effort I want to see from the state in rescuing the Asante Akyem North MP, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, I am not seeing it. But what the NDC, as the ruling party, is rather interested in is finding a candidate. They are embarking on a candidate search and that candidate, I understand, has been allocated huge sums of money to contest as an independent candidate in the constituency,” he noted.

Collins Amankwah further alleged that although the NDC publicly portrays itself as being concerned about rescuing the incarcerated MP, the situation behind the scenes is different.

He claimed that the party is instead focused on identifying a candidate who can take over the seat from OK Frimpong, should circumstances prevent him from continuing to serve as the MP.

“If they want to rescue Ohene Kwame Frimpong, they should demonstrate it. It should not be by mouth only. As we speak, behind the scenes, the NDC is searching for a candidate with huge financial backing, just to outwit the NPP, because everybody is aware that the Asante Akyem enclave belongs to the NPP,” he said.

Collins Amankwah further accused the NDC that: “They are only fanfooling as if they care about the welfare of an incarcerated Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North but that is not the case.”

Background

The Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Ohene Kwame Frimpong, was arrested by Dutch security officials at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on May 10, 2026, shortly after a KLM flight from Accra landed in the Netherlands.

The arrest was reportedly linked to allegations involving romance scams and money laundering.

According to reports, Dutch officials identified the MP, read him his rights, placed him in handcuffs and escorted him from the aircraft into a waiting security van before taking him into detention.

OK Frimpong remains in custody in Amsterdam after two attempts to secure his release on bail were reportedly rejected by Dutch authorities.

Majority Chief Whip and South Dayi MP, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, disclosed that two applications, including a substantive bail request and a subsequent appeal, were unsuccessful.
