The back story on this issue is of great import and clarifies the current brouhaha over Anyidoho's "dog whistle" political hardball comments!
The MATEMEHO/NLM/UP/PP/PFP/NPP political lineage has always featured an often dominant section of ethnic chauvinists & ethnic bigots! There two phenomenona are related but not the same to wit ethnic chauvinism is a necessary precursor to ethnic bigotry however a chauvinist is not necessarily a bigot!!
It is undisputable that since 1951 all political groupings have employed chauvinism of the local sort ie: in a local race for Parliament for example various candidates of the same ethnicity may on one level compete as to who is more Asante,Asogli,Dagbamba or Ga etc! On another level chauvinism may be expressed by " yes he is a child of this area born and bred but he is of " guest/immigrant" lineage so I am the more qualified candidate. These forms of "local electoral chauvinism" is found all over the world but is also constrained by the fact that electorates do take other more germane factors such as reputation,community mindedness, charisma etcetera into account before making their choice! In the Ghanaian context it is nothing new, traditionally we create new stools and skins for nonnative persons who have demonstrated love and service to their adopted home communities, in the modern context we have numerous examples of nonnatives winning elections over natives where the voter pool is overwhelmingly native a demonstration that Ghanaians generally speaking are not blinded by pure ethnic considerations!! The Ga-Adanbe are the exemplars of this tradition,the most famous example being of course Kwame Nkrumah and the Accra Central now Ashiedu Keteke constituency!!
The MATEMEHO leadership has over a 64 year span, have consistently demonstrated a relentless proclivity to employ ethnic bigotry,ethnic denigration and a malpernicious habit of labelling their adversaries as non Ghanaian Afrikan aliens in their relatively unsuccessful attempts to attain national power!! They also consistently deploy a nauseating false narrative of "you know other ethnicities are irrationally jealous of,hate and discriminate against us Akanfu to silmanteously motivate and blind the extreme bigots that form their base!! A careful study of this and other fora confirms this analysis is the overwhelming majority of offensive ethnic bigotry is spewed by the minority of Akanfu who have bought into the false narrative!! This is a self defeating abysmally stupid strategy!! The reality is no party based on offensive chauvinism and bigotry can be a natural majority party in Ghana due to the demographic peculiarities of Ghana in general and in the NPP case, extreme bigotry is a minority view among Akanfu!
Under this circumstances the MATEMEHO leadership by deploying and stubbornly sticking to this failed strategy have created an enormous political liability and vulnerability!! It is not surprising therefore that their opponents are not above using "dog whistle" techniques to exploit this vulnerability!! As unfortunate, classless or even repugnant as Anyidoho's comments may be viewed, it is political malpractice of the highest order for NPP's adversaries to abstain from using this vulnerability to their
advantage!! After all MATEMEHOFU have been deploying crude offensive ethnic chauvinism and bigotry for nearly 65 years, no other political groupings are guilty of this malevolent nation wrecking modus operandi!! Mr Karbo may have a point however to paraphrase another notorious black lackey of the white supremacist world view: IF YOUR LONG DEMONSTRATED ETHNIC BIGOTRY AND DENIGRATION HAS BEEN UNLEASHED AS WEAPON AGAINST YOU!
