Correspondence from the Volta Region

Boys dormitory in Comboni Technical School, a second cycle institution located in Sogakope, South Tongu District of the Volta Region is razed down by fire today.

No student casualty has been recorded so far but several students' belongings including books and bags have been destroyed by the fire. Only final year students were on campus before the incident and this is due to the school closure directive from the President of the Republic as a way to combat the spread of COVID-19 pandemic.

It took the quick intervention of fire personnel from the South Tongu District sector command to bring the fire under control after battling with the fire for more than an hour. The cause of the outbreak is not yet known as the fire division of the district is yet to make an official statement about the unfortunate incident.

In a video footage obtained by GhanaWeb, some angry students of the school could be heard saying they would not write the exam. It is not known what exams they were talking about.

Today's incident at Comboni Technical School adds up to the recent fire outbreaks recorded in various second cycle institutions across the country in 2020 alone with Accra Academy taking the lead as it recorded two fire incidents in their dormitories in just a month.

These incidents forced Africa Education Watch, a non-governmental organisation (NGO), to call on Ghana education Service (GES) to liaise with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) and the respective district security committees to organize school fire prevention/safety outreach exercises in all Senior High Schools across the length and breadth of the country.
