Landslide leaves commuters stranded, disrupts traffic in Tarkwa

Hundreds of motorists and commuters were forced to alter their travel plans on Sunday after a landslide blocked the Ackon–Bogoso Junction road in Tarkwa, causing significant disruption to movement in parts of the municipality.

The landslide, which occurred near Redeemer Hospital opposite the Gold Fields Junction following heavy rainfall, left the busy stretch of road impassable after mud, rocks and debris engulfed the roadway.

Drivers heading towards Bogoso and surrounding communities were compelled to make U-turns or seek alternative routes, resulting in delays and increased transportation costs for commuters and commercial transport operators.

Some road users were left stranded for hours as they searched for alternative means of reaching their destinations, while businesses that depend on the route also experienced interruptions.

The blockage created traffic challenges on adjoining roads as motorists diverted to other routes, raising concerns about road safety and travel times across the municipality.

For many commuters, the incident served as a reminder of the vulnerability of key road networks during periods of heavy rainfall, especially in areas susceptible to landslides and erosion.

Residents have expressed concern about the recurring nature of landslides at the location, noting that a similar incident occurred there recently.

They are calling for long-term measures to stabilize the hillside and prevent future disruptions.

Although no injuries or fatalities were reported, the incident had an immediate impact on mobility, affecting workers, traders, students and other travellers who rely on the route for their daily activities.

Authorities are expected to assess the affected area and begin efforts to clear the debris and restore normal traffic flow.
