Outspoken Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, wants National Chairman of the opposition NDC, Mr Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, charged with treason in an alleged audio recording purported [but confirmed] to be his voice.
According to Kennedy Agyapong, contents of the leaked tape must be condemned after insisting that the NDC Chairman face the law for his “reckless” utterances to incite mayhem prior to the 2020 elections.
“Hope you remember when I made some comments and was charged with treason by the CID. Ofosu-Ampofo is not human than me so he must face the law just as I did,” he said in an interview with NEAT FM’s morning show, ‘Ghana Montie’.
Kennedy Agyapong Charged With Treason
Tuesday, April 17, 2012, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong was charged with treason - this follows investigations into a statement he allegedly made on an Accra based radio station, Oman FM, inciting supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to foment trouble.
He was arrested after declaring war in reaction to attacks on NPP supporters during the biometric registration exercise in 2012.
Ofosu-Ampofo’s Leaked Tape
A leaked audio purported to be the voice of NDC’s National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, which went viral on Tuesday, is creating ‘fear and panic’ ahead of the 2020 General elections.
The leaked tape which is believed to be from a meeting held at the NDC’s headquarters days after the infamous Ayawso West Wuogon by-election violence, captures leading members of the opposition party allegedly planning strategies the NDC will use to regain power in 2020.
National Chairman, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo, who could be heard speaking to some party members without equivocation, noted the NDC will target lives of NPP members in 2020 since state security cannot protect them.
According to him, another delicate aspect to win the 2020 election is targeting the EC Chairperson, Madam Jean Mensa.
”We must wage a relentless war on this EC Chair, me she doesn’t want to see my face . . .” he told the party gathering.
“We will go after them, but we will not go after them face-to-face. We have to use tactical operation to make life very uncomfortable for them. We will target some people and we will let the people know that their lives are in danger,” Ofosu-Ampofo allegedly said.
CID Invites Ofosu-Ampofo Over Leaked Tape
Meanwhile, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service has invited the chairman of the opposition party over the contents of the leaked tape.
The CID’s invitation of Mr Ofosu-Ampofo follows the security agency's interception of the leaked tape, ASP David Eklu Director-General Public Affairs said in a news release Wednesday.
Mr Ofosu-Ampofo is to report at the CID headquarters Thursday at 10 am, portions of the release read.
"Concocted & False"
It followed the NDC’s strong denial of the contents of the leaked tape. In a statement of its own, the NDC described the leaked tape involving its national Chairman as “concocted and false.”
“The NDC states for the records that the statements and attributions contained on the said tape are concocted and false. They are inconsistent with the character and track record of Chairman Ofosu-Ampofo and do not reflect the values he has always stood for,” the NDC’s Director of communications Sammy Gyamfi said.
