Don’t link all female academic successes to ‘sex for grades’ – Gabby

Leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, has waded into discussions on the ‘sex for grade’ scandal, urging Ghanaians not to assume all females who excel academically exchange ‘sex for grades’.

In a Facebook post, he expressed his delight in the issue becoming a major one for discussion in the country whilst calling for a responsible debate on it.

“Sex for grades is a global phenomenon and I am glad it has become a major issue here in Ghana now. It must be discussed, and it must be made a very expensive habit.

But, we should not be chauvinistic and stretch it to link good grades for female students to sex. Far from the truth.”

Mr Otchere-Darko noted that the act is a result of ‘some perverted lecturers’ abusing their position.

“What it often means is that some perverted lecturers exploit their ‘respected’ position in front of the class and the hyped threat of low grades as bullying tools to usually attempt to sexually abuse some students. We must welcome the debate but conduct it responsibly.”

The nation has been thrown into a state of debate after two lecturers of the University of Ghana were captured in a BBC documentary making sexual advances at persons supposed to be students.

Prof Ransford Gyampo and Dr Butakor have however denied any wrongdoing, with the former threatening to sue the international media house.
