GTV Failed To Cover "Kafo Didi" march

Fri, 5 Sep 2003 Source: GNA

Accra, Sept. 5, GNA - The Minority in Parliament on Friday said it was disappointed that Ghana Television (GTV) failed to show the images of the NDC's "Kafo Didi" March held in Kumasi on Tuesday on its late news bulletin.

In a statement issued in Accra and signed by Mr Alban Bagbin, the Minority Leader, it said it had since received information that "unwarranted interference" in the work of the GTV newsroom ensured that the images of the march were not re-broadcast in the late news bulletin. The statement said the Minority was reminding GTV that it existed as a public broadcaster to uphold the national interest "rather than parochial partisan interest".

It said GTV had showed "open bias" towards the New Patriotic Party, adding that it had cause to protest in a statement on the floor of the House about open bias of the host and panellists of the "Breakfast Show".

"The Minority expresses reluctance to resort to the law courts to compel GBC to carry out its constitutional duties as had been the case in the past. It believes there are sufficient upright persons in the organisation, who are realising the unconstitutional course the corporation is charting, and will call for corrective action.
"As soon as the complete video record of the Kumasi "Kafo Didi" March is ready, (the Minority) will request GTV to show the full coverage in line with the spirit of Article 163 of the Constitution." The Minority said it hoped the National Media Commission was observing the media landscape and would take steps to let the state media conform to the provisions of the Constitution. 05 Sept. 03
