Member of Parliament (MP) for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has advised the Akufo-Addo government “never to underestimate the people”, arguing that Ghanaians have shown, by refusing to believe government’s claims of a coup plot, that “they are more discerning, very much on the alert and quite obviously have very little appetite for elaborate plots by Government to divert attention.”

He contends that the refusal of Ghanaians, irrespective of how they voted in 2016 to show any sympathy to the ruling government by believing its information that there was a plot to overthrow it, is the real coup.

“The real coup has been the striking, overwhelming and devastating refusal of Ghanaians across the board -regardless of how they voted in 2016- to show any sympathy by falling for what many are now referring to as the kitchen knife plot,” he wrote in a Social Media post.

The Ranking Member on Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee has therefore urged government to realise that it has squandered its goodwill, and should focus on real issues.

“Government must now realize that all of its goodwill has been squandered and that the expectation of the people is for the President Akufo-Addo and his large sized government to focus on the real issues that have led to so much disappointment in the Government and made living conditions for the masses far more unbearable than the effect of powdered pepper in the eye – the pun being very much intended,” he stressed.

Upon the initial arrest of three persons alleged to be plotting to destabilize the government, the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, made it known that the plotters had been monitored for 15 months as they planned to destabilize the Government before their arrest.

The three suspects have been put before court, and are currently in the custody of the security agencies.

Two others including a senior military officer, Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli and Gershon Akpa who is a civilian employee have also been arrested and were remanded by a Kaneshie District Court presided over by Rosemond Dodua Agyiri for their alleged involvement in a coup plot.
