High Turnout At NDC March

Tue, 2 Sep 2003 Source: Joy Online

Organisers of the NDC’s march in Kumasi to protest what the party says is the worsening economic plight of the ordinary man are patting themselves on the back for a successful march. The march dubbed “Okafo Didi” (Debtors eat) is the second after a similar one organised by the party in Accra last May.

Led by Professor John Evans Atta-Mills, the Flagbearer of the NDC for 2004 Elections and Former President Jerry John Rawlings, Founder of the Party, the demonstrators started from the Post Office Square, went through Prempeh II Street to Unicorn House and then through Fuller Road to the overhead bridge, through Asafo Roundabout and ended with a rally at Jackson Park.

NDC Chairman, Dr Obed Asamoah, who was reportedly out of the country and was expected back on Monday evening was not spotted at the March. Official figures have not been given yet, but reports say the demonstration was successful. This is in view of the fact that the Ashanti Region is the ruling party’s stronghold.

The rally at the Jackson Park was addressed by Prof Atta Mills, ex-President Rawlings and other leading members. Prof Mills said no amount of arrogance and intimidation by the ruling party will couch the NDC into submission.

He however warned the NPP to be ready to accept defeat after the 2004 elections. “We know that the people of Ghana have seen the difference between the NDC and the NPP. Come 2004, the people of this country are going to speak. But I have one advise for the NPP. When the people speak, they must listen loud and clear as the NDC did”, he added.

Former President Rawlings for his part, accused the government of condoning corruption. He urged Commanders of the Security Services to call the government to order and stop using what he termed “backdoor to recruit people into the security services”.
