Lawyer Atta Akyea throws a jab ahead of NPP presidential primaries
A leading member of the New Patriotic Party, Samuel Atta Akyea, has dismissed claims by a section of the party that individuals who claim to have spent significantly on the party should lead the party as its presidential candidate in 2028.
In his view, the wealth of individual aspirants cannot be used as a yardstick to determine their leadership qualities, nor can the same be used to grant an aspirant automatic qualification for those seeking to lead the party.
Lawyer Atta Akyea's comment comes on the back of recent narratives about individuals and their wealth, as well as their contributions to the party as financiers, as the NPP prepares for its presidential primaries early next year.
Speaking to Asaase Radio on the subject matter, he said, "Do you know the number of people who have contributed significantly to the party but have always remained silent? Do you know the number of people the party resourced to become successful and later came back to support the party without making noise?"
He continued, "Must your wealth give you automatic qualification as a leader? If you have money but you cannot think properly, how can you lead? So richness is not the sole factor and variable for leadership, and people must understand this".
"You have a lot of money, and it makes you an automatic leader? Where is this logic coming from? It takes more than money to govern a nation. Patience is part of it, and calmness is also part of it," he added.
I paid GH¢1m debt that allowed Fomena MP to agree to join majority caucus - Ken Agyapong
According to Atta Akyea, any person or group of persons who go about bragging about their achievements and call on the masses to appreciate them cannot be good leaders.
He, therefore, appealed to both Kennedy Agyapong and Dr Bryn Acheampong to remain silent on their wealth and riches, saying, "The moment you talk about money and power, you're not competent to lead because money is not all that you need to lead."
I funded NPP Eastern Region candidates, executives with GH¢52 billion in 2024 - Bryan Acheampong
In the wake of the processes leading up to the final presidential primaries of the NPP, a rift has emerged over who among the five aspirants is the richest and has made the greatest sacrifices for the party.
As a leading aspirant, Kennedy Agyapong is on record for mentioning how much he allegedly contributed to the NPP as far back as 1992, when the party was formed, and his subsequent contributions.
Dr Bryan Acheampong, on the other hand, recently disclosed a whopping sum of money he allegedly spent on delegates in the Eastern region in 2023 to support Dr Bawumia's bid to lead the party as a flagbearer for the 2024 national elections.
