The freshly inaugurated Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has announced the reopening of the school for Friday, November 16.

As a result, lectures will resume on Monday, November 19.

This was contained in a statement released on Tuesday, a few hours after the six new members of the Council were sworn into office.

KNUST has closed down since Monday, October 22 after riotous students vandalized property and set some ablaze.

An inspection by the Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) that very day resulted in the Chairman, Simon Mensah, announcing the immediate closure of the school.

Since then, efforts have gone into reopening the premier science and technology university in the country with some students even complaining the status quo was affecting their studies.

A tussle between government and some stakeholders notably the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Teachers and Educational Workers’ Union (TEWU) over representatives had delayed the reconstitution of the Council by Chancellor Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

On Tuesday, six new members were inaugurated.

Otumfuo announced that a meeting would be held immediately as time was minimal for the restoration of academic life at the school.

He expressed a personal desire to have the school reopened on Wednesday.

But the meeting decided on Friday, the decision was taken in consultation with REGSEC.
