Hundreds of Muslims have gathered at the Independence Square in Accra to offer prayers as they mark the Eid al-Adha celebrations.

As part of activities to mark the day, President Nana Akufo-Addo has joined the Chief Imam, Sheikh Dr. Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu and the rest of the muslim community to celebrate and he is currently addressing the gathering.

The president presented a bull for slaughter as part of the rites performed during the prayers.

Background

Today marks Eid al-Adha, an Islamic holiday also known as the “Festival of Sacrifice.” The holiday is the first of four days when Muslims sacrifice meaningful things to Allah, typically sheep, cows, chickens and goats, which they slaughter, cook and share with family, friends and the poor.

Eid al-Adha also marks the end of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 10-day pilgrimage Muslims take to Mecca. Hajj is a pilgrimage all Muslims must take at least once in their lives.
