NPP Decides: Overview of the primaries

The NPP on Saturday, September 28, 2019, parliamentary primaries in 104 orphan constituencies

Termed “orphan constituencies”, these are areas where the party lost the 2016 Parliamentary Elections to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and therefore has no sitting Members of Parliament on the party’s side in Parliament.

In all there are a total of 106 “orphan constituencies” for the NPP, Two ‘orphans ’was on hold.

The NPP today is holding primaries in 169 constituencies where it has incumbent MPs and Krachi West Constituency in the Oti Region, where it has no MP.

67 people going unopposed.

The unopposed candidates are mainly within the Ashanti and Eastern regions, the strongholds of the party.

The Ashanti Region has 16 contestants who will contest unchallenged while the Eastern has 12.

A total of 42 of the unopposed aspirants are ministers and deputy ministers. One aspirant is a non-MP, and four of the NPP’s leadership in parliament are sole contestants. The rest are sitting MPs.

Mr Iddi Ziblim who is the incumbent and Osman Mahama, withdrew from the parliamentary contest to allow the Chief Executive of the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), Mr Alhassan Tampuli, to go unopposed in Gushegu.

Tampuli was selected after extensive consultation with relevant stakeholders in line with Article 12 of the party’s constitution, the NPP

In Dormaa Central, Dr Yao Yeboah discontinued his interest in challenging Minister of Health, Kweku Agyeman Manu, for the slot.

The minister is recuperating from the dreaded coronavirus, the same infection he has been leading the country to contain as cases surge close to 13,000.

Dormaa Central and Gushegu will, therefore, hold their primary together with the others on Saturday, June 27, 2020.

In all 26 hotspots across 10 regions has been identified. This can be attributed to the aspirants’ stature in politics, their influence in the constituencies and ability to mobilise, among other factors.

The party is also expected to endorse President Nana Akufo-Addo as flagbearer and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as running mate for the duo to seek another four-year term on 27 June.

This will take place at a National Council meeting in Accra.
