No excuses for ‘police indolence’ to arrest party thugs - Prof. Attafuah

Criminologist Prof. Kenneth Agyemang Attafuah has condemned the Ghana Police Service for their inability to maintain law and order in the wake of reported takeover of public facilities by some supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party.

"There is no excuse or justification for police indolence in enforcing the laws of this country against so-called political criminals," he said.

Some alleged NPP members have been on a frenzy, seizing public toilets, toll booths as well as offices of state institutions such as YEA, NADMO, Passport Office, NHIS, Harbours, among others, in Accra and other parts of the country.

Even though the leadership of the NPP has condemned the seizures and invasion, the Dean of Central University’s Faculty of Law argues that maintaining law and order is the job of the police hence they must be proactive to stop the unlawful conduct of the party foot soldiers.

"I think that the practice whereby the police turn a proverbial blind eye to criminality encourages the behaviour and helps to perpetuate this cyclical repetition where one party is replaced by the other," he said in an interview with Joy FM's Prince Minkah on Tuesday, January 10.

He suggested “stern law enforcement by the police” and admonished the president to call the foot soldiers to order.
