Paul Afoko - embattled NPP Chairman
The suspended Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, says per the constitutional provisions of the party, the NPP cannot succeed in turning Tuesday’s National Executive Committee(NEC) meeting to a legal activity, despite the fact that the said meeting was well attended.
Mr. Afoko had earlier issued a statement cautioning members of the executive committee of the party against attending Tuesday’s meeting.
The statement said: “Mr. Afoko wishes to state that he has not called any meeting neither has the General Secretary, Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, issued any notice inviting members to attend any meeting.
However, the contentious meeting reportedly had massive turn out, in excess of over 90 party members entitled to attend what is believed to be an illegal meeting, according to the suspended Chairman of the NPP.
The party’s flagbearer, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his running mate, Mahamudu Bawumia were all sighted at the NEC meeting yesterday, alongside a majority of party reps from the regions, and parliament.
But the spokesperson of Mr Afoko, Nana Yaw Osei will not take any of this, insisting that nothing makes such meeting a legal, when the party has blatantly undermined the constitutional mandate of the right person who is supposed to be calling for that meeting.
“The mere fact that people attended the meeting doesn’t make it legal; they should have gotten about 200 people to attend that meeting, and they will still not succeed in turning it into a legal meeting.The one who convened that meeting does not have the constitutional mandate to call for that meeting.
“The party’s General Secretary is in town but nobody invited him- I’ve spoken to him, and he did confirm to me,” he told Accra-based Citi FM in an interview on Tuesday.
