Ofosu Ampofo’s prosecution beginning of Akufo-Addo government's fall – Asiedu Nketia

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said the Akufo-Addo government has set itself up for defeat in the upcoming 2020 by deciding to engage in political prosecution of the NDC National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo.

Mr Ofosu-Ampofo who has been charged with conspiracy to cause harm and assault against a public officer following a leaked tape during a meeting with party communicators, has been granted bail in the sum of GHC100,000 after appearing in court Tuesday.

In a leaked tape a voice which is said to be that of Mr Ofosu Ampofo is heard telling party communicators that “we’re going to take her [EC boss] to the cleaners.”

“As for the EC chair, we must wage a relentless war on this EC chair. Me, she doesn’t want to see my face,”Ofosu-Ampofo allegedly said at the meeting which took place after the Ayawaso by-election.

He’d also incited the party communicators to verbally attack the Peace Council chairman Professor Emmanuel Asante.

But commenting after Mr Ofosu Ampofo’s first appearance in court today, Tuesday 16th April, 2019, Johnson Asiedu Nketia stated condemned what he called political prosecution of the NDC Chairman.

“It is just political intimidation, I’m not sure it will end anywhere because they themselves were not confident about the charges they were talking about. So we think that this is intimidation but this is the beginning of the fall of Nana Akufo-Addo’s government. He’s demonstrated to the whole world that he’s not in for any rule of law. He’s just in power showing his machoism but it will not end anywhere. It will end in his removal from office come 2020 so we are not disturbed at all.”
