A Primary Five pupil of Aggrey Primary School at Achimota, a suburb of Accra, has allegedly committed suicide by hanging.

The deceased, identified as Belinda Gabla, 14, purportedly committed the act on Saturday, March 11, 2017, at about 7:30 pm. She was found hanging on a tree close to their residence at Dome Pillar Two in Accra.

It is however, not clear the reason for the purported action, but residents suspect that she might have done it out of broken heart.

This adds to four the number of persons who have allegedly taken their lives in Accra alone in less than a week.

It would be recalled that a final-year student of the University of Ghana, Jennifer Nyarko, on Wednesday reportedly committed suicide by jumping from a four-storey building on campus.

That same Wednesday, the body of a taxi driver was discovered hanging on a tree at Achimota and Monday morning, another body was discovered by the Ashaiman police hanging on a tree at Ashaiman Jericho.

Information as at press time yesterday indicated that Belinda Gabla lived with her grandfather and another elder sister identified as Janet Gabla at their uncompleted self-contained apartment at Dome Pillar Two.

Their mother is a trader who plies her trade from Accra to Bator in the Volta Region and often visits the family at their Dome residence.

On that fateful Saturday morning, a witness said, Belinda, together with her sister, performed their household chores without any suspicion that she had any problem.

At about 7:15 pm, after helping in the preparation of supper, she joined the grandfather and her sister to dine after which she collected the plates to wash.

The grandfather later reportedly went into his room to sleep and after sometime, he came out for fresh air only to discover that his granddaughter was hanging on a tree close to the house.

The Accra Regional Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Efia Tenge, said police received a report from Edward Agbemabia, grandfather of the deceased Saturday night.

She said the police went to the house to pick the body to the Police Hospital for preservation while investigations continue.
