Sammy Adjei opens up on alleged sabotage that ended his career

Former Black Stars and Hearts of Oak goalkeeper, Sammy Adjei has revealed that his once-promising career was cut short not by a lack of ability, but by sabotage from people who wanted him out of the way.

Speaking on Angel TV, the man affectionately known as “Bamako” shared emotional reflections on how hidden forces pushed him into what he describes as a premature “retirement” at just 25 years old.

Adjei, who rose to fame in the early 2000s, was a central figure in Hearts of Oak’s legendary 2000 treble-winning season, lifting the Ghana Premier League, FA Cup, and CAF Champions League.

His performances made him Ghana’s first-choice goalkeeper during the Black Stars’ transitional years, and many expected him to dominate the position for a decade.

But according to him, his rise also attracted envy and internal sabotage.

“They retired me at almost 25 years. It wasn’t my own choice. Although you’re working hard, there’s someone back there who wishes for your downfall,” Adjei recalled.

His decline in the national team coincided with a knee injury in 2005 ahead of Ghana’s crucial World Cup qualifier against South Africa.

While team doctors confirmed he picked up the injury a week before the game, his absence opened the door for Richard Kingson, who impressed and never looked back.

For Adjei, however, the injury was only part of the story.

“Sometimes when I sit down and reflect, I feel I could have done more, but someone worked for the downfall of my talent,” he added.
