Mr Ransford Gyampo, a professor at the University of Ghana, Legon, has said he will continue to speak his mind and help shape governance and democracy in the country in spite of the insults hurled at him by supporters of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP).

According to him, a recent criticism he levelled against the government’s decision to dissolve the Governing Council of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has attracted a lot of insults targeted at him by supporters of the NPP.

He observed that most of the insults hurled at him are borne out of a misunderstanding of his comments on governance issues.

Prof Gyampo has, therefore, urged his critics to understand his utterances before reacting.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, 11 November 2018, he wrote: “I am disappointed in the way and manner you incited your babies with sharp teeth to insult me just for speaking my mind.

“I ideally didn’t want to respond but I am compelled to do so because I feel there is some genuine misunderstanding of what I said, particularly given the way the media reported it. I never called for the dissolution of this government in that sense. Indeed, it would be unconstitutional to ask for this. Those who are discerning knew what I was talking about.

“All I meant to say was that if we cannot dissolve an entire government just because a demonstration resulted in casualties, we cannot also dissolve an entire KNUST Governing Council just because students demonstrated. That was what my post was about, finito!

“I am clarifying this not because the insults got to me. I have done so just to tell you that you must read every post with meaning and understanding.

“I will continue to speak my mind. If that means praising the government, so be it. But if it also means keeping the government on its toes, I will do so, all in the name of helping to shape our governance and democracy.”
