When they failed to disintegrate Asanteman, the British brought Asantehene back after 20+ years in exile at Seychelles. He was never replaced as Asanteman kept his throne until he came back. Then he was given all the lands they took from him. Asanteman started fighting for its independence from early 1800's when the British wanted to rule over Asanteman.This led to a series of wars between the 2 powers ... world super power at that time being humiliated by an African kingdom. Out of 5 wars, Asanteman won 3, Britain won 2 1874 and 1896. The first war was in 1824. So it took the British almost a whole century to defeat Asanteman. All the other tribes in Ghana, except the Ewes, were fighting against Asanteman. Only the Ewes were Asanteman allies and fought with us. Please learn your history and stop the insults. It took troops from India, Jamaica, Nigeria and many Commonwealth troops plus 2500 British soldiers to ambush Asanteman in 1874. Why would Britain take that war so serious? Because they had been defeated previously on 3 occasions.

First, Asantes were part of the independence struggle beginning in the late 1940s. Yes, the UGCC originally was predominantly from the original Gold Coast prior to Burns Constitution of 1946 which brought the Asante and NT Protectorates into the Gold Coast colony. But, with the arrival of Nkrumah, this changed drastically. Every corner of the Gold Coast embraced the independence movt after the boycott of the AWAM firms and teh shooting at the Crossroads.
When the CPP split from the UGCC, it carried the Asantes with it. The CPP won resoundingly in the election of 1951 in Asante, which then included BA. Nkrumah accepting Arthur Lewis "rainy day budget" with the advice not to increase cocoa prices, of course, precipitated the defection of many Asante leaders of the CPP, e.g., R.R. Amponsah, to lead the formation of the NLM under the linguist Baffoe Akoto. Their actions delayed Ghana's full independence, which could have happened in 1954.
Now, the leaders of the UGCC who probably promised to make the Asantehene over "Akanland," the name JB chose for the new nation, were just on a fishing trip. Not worth wasting time on.
Now, the Asante kingdom is the youngest of the Akan kingdoms which arose in the forest area, thanks to slave labour to clear the forest, mine for the gold and cart timber to the coast. Slaves were being brough from the Bight of Benin and as far as the Congo and Anloga to be sold to the Akans by the whites. This trade was estimated to be more valuable than the slave trade. It was only after the rise of Asante that the Gold Coast became a net supplier of slaves. Asante rose and prospered on the slave trade and collapsed with the demise of the slave trade. The gory records and details are there.
