Many many awful things are happening in our borders.
A custom officer narrated his ordeal: he said there are huge quantities of cocoa smuggling from Ghana to Togo at the borders at Oti region. Every time the custom officers are being bribed in thousands of cedis
after that they share the bounties which is always ranging from thousands to millions of cedis. This good custom officer used to refuse to be part of this corrupt syndicate said at a point he joined them and also started enjoying with the corrupt proceeds from the bribes. This time his conscience erased now is also part of the corrupt system aiding and abetting, sharing the bounties with his colleagues meanwhile he was not part of it.
This is no place other than Oti region.
The smugglers are able to buy cocoa from the cocoa growing regions, which I presume is from Ashanti, the Brong Ahiafo regions.
If Cocoa can leak through the Oti region then how about the other borders close to the Ivory Coast, Aflao and even to the Burkina Faso?
Mr there is need for extra vigilance to be able to plug these loopholes.

Please Mr. Forson, it is not negligence but rather intentional collaboration with these smugglers to dupe Ghana of its natural resources. All along the border towns in Ghana, that is what is going on from time immemorial. Volta region being the hotspot in this nefarious activity. I have travelled through most of the borders along that stretch, far in the late seventies and early eighties, and what I saw there was heartbreaking. Ghana needs to find an antidote to the smuggling along our borders, other than that, we are doomed forever.

The Custom Division of the Internal Revenue service is one of the most corrupt institutions in the country..However, no government has been able to stop the corruption that goes on especially at the ports.All they fo is to appoint a military officer to head it thinking he can instil discipline there to stop the stealing by the officers..With thosands of unemployed graduates in the country now,the current government should be bold to replace custom officers at the ports with fresh recruits for 3 months and take steps to block all loopholes being used by these unpatrotic custom officers.
