Founder of the International Central Gospel Church, (ICGC) Rev Dr Mensa Otabil, has urged believers to look beyond rituals and rediscover the true meaning of the season as Christians worldwide celebrate Easter.

In a YouTube conversation titled ‘What Easter Is All About,' Rev Dr Otabil presented Easter not as a cultural event, but the defining message of Christianity centered on love, sacrifice, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

According to him, Easter is not simply one of many Christian celebrations, but the foundation of the believers faith itself.

“We can’t overemphasise it. It (Easter) is critical to our faith. Some would say it is the most important aspect of our faith…So, it’s a whole package; the incarnation, His birth, His life and His death and His resurrection…but the resurrection is the final act that defeats the sin of the world, as well as the dominion over Satan,” he stated.

He further explained that Easter distinguishes Christianity from other religions as it affirms that Jesus is not just a historical figure, but a living saviour.

Drawing from biblical teachings, he described Easter as the ultimate demonstration of God’s love for humanity by sending His son to die for the sins of men.

“If He died for his own sin then we could say that He paid for the wages of his sin but the Bible makes it clear that his accusers could not find fault with him at his judgment…so, Jesus is dying but his accusers cannot find fault with him, the judges did find fault with him, to the extent that Pilate does not find fault in him…

“So, his death was not because He is guilty but a death for humanity…that is why his death is redemptive,” he explained.

He indicated that Jesus could have died a painless death but he had to go through a painful death for humanity to be redeemed from their sins.

Eventually, the resurrection was necessary in the sense that it validates the death, but it also establishes that this “man is truly God because people don’t die and come back to life.

“…that which is to be meant to be humanity’s punishment has been paid for by that act of Jesus Christ, hence sin has been defeated,” he stated.
