I like and admire the present Asantehene a lot, for his social interaction with others. Although I haven't met him in person unlike his predecessor, Opoku Ware the 2nd whom i met in person during the 50th anniversary of restoration of the Asanteman Confederacy in 1985 at the Manhyia Palace

I was young then, had the opportunity to travel from Accra with a high level "invitee" from the UK to Kumasi to witness the celebration. Unfortunately, I had to cut my visit short because of the sight of "Abrafuo" via windows of a building at the entrance of the Manhyia Palace when the gate was opened for my friend driver and the British guest seated at the back of the then newly acquired Mercedes Benz AMG with registration number that begins with letters AS....facilitated or owned by one Kojo Nyantakyi, resident in the UK and connected to the then Asantehene Opoku Ware, in which we were chauffured to the Palace.

That night, my friend and I were hosted in one of Opoku Ware's daughter's (Nana Ama) house in a residential area around the the Golden Tulip or City Hotel area but I couldn't sleep a wink and had to take a serious decision to leave Kumasi the following day, leaving the 2 people I went with behind. I remember vividly jumping into Kimpo's car, Kimpo is brother of Kojo Nyantakyi, the oil/energy investor is among those who facilitated the oil discovery Kufuor took over. You can believe me or not, this is a piece of history I'm sharing with Ghanaians

One would ask why I left; Yes, I left because I was afraid the Abrafuo would cut my head as we used to hear, are the Palace executioners, famous for looking for "heads to cut"

I know I'll one day meet the present Asantehene, look in his face and shake hands with him and probably join him dancing. I like him too much, irrespective of what some people say about him. He looks more sociable and accommodating than the past one, Opoku Ware, whom I met when I was a young boy, naive but smart to have deserted Kumasi at the sight of those horrible creatures of humans called "Abrafuo"

Mr Cool Blue, the present day Abrafuour or Executioners in the Manhyia Palace no longer “ look for human heads to cut off”. They are there to remind everyone of the bygone days when they were feared for their role as executioners. These days they are paraded just to add glamour to the traditional occasions that are celebrated in the palace. They look frightening, but you don’t have to be scared of them. Don’t go out at night though if the current Asantehene dies.

You see, I was young and naive then, having made reference to what history books said about the famous Abrafuor Executioners, one would have been careful when faced with the reality. As you rightly put it, I grew up to understand those were things of the past, though it's still practiced when a King dies and the advice is, don't go out during those mourning/ceremonial days!

Nevertheless, I haven't regretted the decision I took by leaving Kumasi, actually escaping possible wrath of the Abrafuor Executioners for Accra, the following day.

The funny thing is that, I couldn't see my own sister in Kumasi as planned, got mocked by friends when I got back to Accra for being a "Fearoo" a word we used on each other for cowardice. Meanwhile, I still consider my action as not having placed all my cards on the table.
