Anti-gay thinking came with the criminalization of same-sex conduct by British colonial administrators in 1892, with the implementation of the "unnatural carnal knowledge" laws.

Among the Fante, traditional beliefs held that sexual attraction was determined by the "weight" of a person's soul rather than their biological sex. Those with "light souls" were believed to be naturally drawn to men, regardless of their own gender. In the 18th and 19th century Asante courts, male slaves sometimes served as male concubines.

The Nzema people practiced recognized unions between adult men, commonly with an age difference. These unions, often called agyale ("friendship marriages"), were accompanied by traditional wedding ceremonies, bride-wealth exchanges, and social recognition that mirrored heterosexual marriages.

In northern Ghana, the Nankani and other groups practiced non-sexual, woman-to-woman marriages.
