The Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) of Sekondi College has announced plans to petition the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) after 154 candidates were reportedly denied the opportunity to sit for the 2026 WASSCE Chemistry paper due to alleged lateness caused by heavy rainfall.

According to the PTA, the affected students arrived at the examination centre only a few minutes after the scheduled start time on Wednesday morning, June 10, 2026, following torrential rains that disrupted movement within Sekondi-Takoradi and surrounding communities.

Speaking in an interview with Citi News, on June 12, 2026, PTA Chairperson Mercy Dadzie Turkson described the situation as unfortunate and heartbreaking, insisting that the students should have been given the chance to write the paper.

“Some students arrived just minutes after the scheduled time but were still refused entry by the external invigilator,” she said.

She explained that the rains created severe transportation challenges, making it difficult for several students to reach the examination centre on time despite their efforts.

According to her, many parents and guardians were left distressed after learning that their wards had been turned away from the examination hall.

The PTA Chairperson said the association would formally petition WAEC to reconsider the decision and allow the affected candidates another opportunity to sit for the Chemistry paper.

“We are pleading with WAEC to look at the circumstances surrounding the incident. These students prepared for months for this examination, and it would be unfair for their future to be affected by a situation beyond their control,” she appealed.

Madam Turkson also called on the Western Regional Minister to intervene and engage WAEC on behalf of the students and their families.

“The PTA is also calling on the Western Regional Minister to intervene in the matter,” she added.

Some parents, according to the PTA, have expressed frustration and disappointment over the strict enforcement of the examination rules despite the unusual weather conditions.

The incident has sparked debate on social media, with many Ghanaians calling for compassion and flexibility in exceptional situations such as severe weather disruptions.

As of the time of filing this report, WAEC had not officially responded to the concerns raised by the Sekondi College PTA.
