The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that the government is working hard to operationalize the Sewua Regional Hospital, Oforikrom Municipal Hospital and Trede District Hospital before the end of 2026.

According to him, the three facilities form part of broader efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery in the Ashanti Region and ease pressure on major referral centres, especially the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), which has recently faced overcrowding challenges.

Speaking on Ghana Tonight on June 15, 2026, Dr Amoakohene revealed that the Ministry of Health had assigned a dedicated team to oversee the opening of the three hospitals.

“The Honourable health minister had set up a task force to help us open the Sewua Regional Hospital, the Trede Hospital and Oforikrom Group Hospital. The task force is working,” he said.

Dr Amoakohene explained that several key infrastructure works were currently underway at the Sewua Regional Hospital to prepare it for operationalisation.

He said electricity connection to the national grid, water supply and road access remained among the major outstanding issues.

“The works that are currently ongoing or yet to be done on Sewua include electricity connection to the grid and the substation over there. As far back as two weeks ago, we got ECG to work on that for us,” he said.

“The work that is yet to start has to do with connection of water supply to the area. The third has to do with the road leading to Sewua and the road leading to the facility,” he indicated.

The Ashanti Regional Minister expressed optimism that the facilities would begin operations before the close of the year, citing assurances from the health minister and budgetary provisions made for pending hospital projects.

“As communicated by the Honourable Health Minister, within this year, we should be able to make sure we open up these facilities. Before the end of the year, most definitely these three facilities we are talking about should be opened and operational,” he stated.

The renewed focus on completing district and regional hospitals in the Ashanti Region comes amid increased scrutiny of emergency healthcare management at major referral centres, particularly following the recent incident at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where emergency admissions were temporarily suspended due to capacity pressures.
