Deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mustapha Gbande, has disclosed that one of his biggest political fears was Kennedy Agyapong becoming the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Okay FM's Ade Akye Abia programme and sighted by GhanaWeb on June 19, 2026, Gbande said Agyapong's forthrightness and willingness to speak his mind made him a politician he viewed as a formidable opponent.

"In fact, my biggest fear was how to deal with Kennedy Agyapong if he had become the flag bearer of the NPP. I was very worried," he said.

Gbande explained that his concerns stemmed from Agyapong's tendency to make candid remarks, even on issues others may avoid discussing publicly.

"I was worried because he's a man who at times can move beyond the bars and speak the truth," he stated.

He further remarked that, in his view, a person who speaks the truth despite their imperfections is one of the most difficult situations to manage in politics.

Gbande's remarks come on the back of recent comments by Kennedy Agyapong, who criticised successive governments, including the NPP administration, over the delayed operationalisation of the Afari Military Hospital in the Ashanti Region.

Speaking to the media after donating a pickup truck and 15 motorcycles to the Ghana Police Service at the Accra Regional Police Headquarters on June 16, 2026, Agyapong lamented that the hospital, conceived as a major healthcare facility for military personnel and civilians, should have been completed years ago.

He noted that the project's foundation was laid under the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, with substantial construction undertaken by a subsequent NDC government.

According to Agyapong, the NPP failed to ensure the completion and operationalisation of the hospital despite being in power for eight years.

“This hospital was started by President John Agyekum Kufuor. The locations and all those things. NDC came to start it, and when we came, I am NPP, and I am telling you the gospel truth. I was the chairman for Defence and Interior, and we didn’t do anything. When we decided to go and inspect Afari, they stopped us. I heard somebody saying the Afari Hospital has been there for 15 months, but we were there for eight years and didn’t do it,” Agyapong indicated.
