Lawyers for embattled Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, have explained what transpired in the courtroom after an Accra High Court dismissed their attempt to block his extradition to the United States.

Speaking to the media on July 2, 2026, his legal team said their application was rooted in a habeas corpus challenge, arguing that whoever had a case against Abu Trica ought to bring the matter to Ghana rather than have him extradited, particularly given that he had other pending cases before the court.

High Court orders Abu Trica's extradition to US

"The court had delivered a ruling on the habeas corpus application. Our application was that whoever had a case against him should come to Ghana, and the trial should take place here because he had other pending cases before the court. All that should be handled here in the country," his lawyers said.

However, they disclosed that the judge held that the committal was valid and that evidence had been duly taken in the matter.

The defence team maintained that they had not been given sight of the evidence against their client, nor had they had the opportunity to test the case brought by his accusers.

"We argued that we haven't seen any evidence, neither have we been able to cross-examine the accusers," they said.

They further clarified that no new charges had been brought against Abu Trica and that he remains on bail.

Despite their arguments, the application was dismissed, with police reportedly on standby to re-arrest him.

"No new charges. He is on bail. But the application was dismissed, and the police were on standby to re-arrest him," they said.

The ruling clears the way for Ghanaian authorities to proceed with Abu Trica's extradition to the US, where he is wanted in connection with an alleged US$8 million romance scam targeting elderly victims.

Reacting to the ruling, the head of his legal team, Barker-Vormawor, expressed disappointment at how quickly the case had moved.

"I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast-tracked, and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 - Abu 1," he wrote on Facebook.

He indicated that the matter would now be taken to the Supreme Court in a fresh bid to challenge the extradition process.

Abu Trica was indicted by US authorities over his alleged role in a romance scam that defrauded elderly victims of more than US$8 million.

According to unsealed documents from the US Attorney's Office for the Northern District of Ohio, he is accused of being part of a criminal network that used artificial intelligence software to assume false identities and cultivate online relationships with elderly victims across the US from 2023 before soliciting money under false pretences such as medical emergencies, travel costs and investment opportunities.

Prosecutors further allege that funds obtained from victims were routed from Ohio to co-conspirators in Ghana and other locations.

He faces charges of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, money laundering conspiracy and a forfeiture specification, and could face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

Abu Trica joins a growing list of Ghanaian celebrities, including Hajia4Reall, Kofi Boat and Dada Joe, who have faced extradition proceedings to the United States in recent years.
