Paul Yandoh (L) says not even President Mahama (R) can stop NPP from holding its internal elections
The Ashanti Regional Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Kwabena Yandoh, has criticised President John Mahama’s decision to hold a two-day national clean-up exercise on the same dates as the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) internal elections, alleging that it is a deliberate attempt to interfere with the party’s democratic processes.
Speaking in a panel discussion on Kumasi-based Akoma FM and shared on X, Yandoh argued that the timing of the clean-up slated for Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, smacks of political sabotage.
“I want to tell President Mahama to listen carefully: Ghana does not belong to the NDC alone. At some point, every leader must learn to tolerate other political parties.
“I think the cleanup is taking place on July 11 and 12 or so. Do you know that on July 11, the NPP will be holding its internal elections? Yet in the mind of the President, it seems as though the NPP does not exist. Hasn’t he heard that the party will be conducting elections on those days? …and he has deliberately fixed the national clean-up exercise on those days?”
"What he is doing is not the mark of a good leader, nor does it reflect inclusiveness," he argued.
He further called on party members not to be discouraged, insisting that the president cannot stop the party from holding its primaries.
"I urge all NPP members not to be discouraged. Not even the President can stop us from holding our primaries," he emphasised.
His comments come following the government's announcement of a nationwide exercise following devastating floods that affected several regions, including the Greater Accra and Ashanti Regions.
President Mahama declares July 10 and 11 National General Cleaning Days
The initiative is aimed at desilting drains, clearing debris, and cleaning public spaces to mitigate future flooding risks.
Security agencies and local assemblies will lead efforts on Friday, July 10, 2026, with the general public, including public officials, ministers, MPs, and MMDCEs, expected to participate on Saturday, July 11, 2026.
Meanwhile, the clean-up has received support from entities like Zoomlion Ghana, which has deployed personnel and equipment.
