National Cleaning Day: Ga Traditional Council orders closure of shops, markets

The Ga Traditional Council has directed that all shops, markets and commercial establishments within Accra remain closed from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, 2026, to support the National General Cleaning Days exercise.

The directive, contained in a press release dated July 7, 2026, was issued by the Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, in partnership with the government and the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister.

According to the Council, the exercise is being undertaken in collaboration with the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), and the Accra Mayor to improve environmental sanitation and restore the cleanliness of the capital.

"As custodians of this land, the Ga Mantse and President of the Ga Traditional Council, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, and the entire membership of the Ga Traditional Council, in partnership with government and on behalf of the Office of the Greater Accra Regional Minister, the Regional Coordinating Council, the Accra Mayor and the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, hereby invoke the spirit of unity and civic duty among the people of the Ga State," the statement said.

The Council explained that the temporary suspension of commercial activities is intended to allow residents to actively participate in cleaning streets, desilting drains and improving sanitation across Accra.

"To ensure our streets are purged of filth and our drains restored to health, the Ga Traditional Council orders that all shops, markets and commercial entities within Accra remain closed between 7:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on both days," the release stated.

It stressed that compliance with the directive is mandatory for all businesses, except emergency services, essential medical facilities and authorised sanitation personnel.

The Ga Traditional Council also urged residents to participate in the exercise with discipline and a shared sense of responsibility.

"Let every citizen rise to this call with discipline. When we cease our trading to cleanse our land, we secure our future and uphold the dignity of our people. A clean Accra is the strength of the Ga State and the pride of our nation."

The statement concluded with a call for collective action, saying: "Clean communities, secure lives."
