To be handcuffed does not mean that the arrested is guilty of any crime. People are handcuffed for the safety of the arresting officer and the offender. In Uncle Sam’s country, one could be arrested and handcuffed for walking even on the wrong side of the road, and even dressing improperly and some designated areas like the a School Zone. To be handcuffed doesn’t make one a criminal but for safety and protection.

According to a Joy News survey, 30 police arrests were made under NPP between 2022 to 2024 for alleged publication of false news, alleged insulting and defamation of NPP government officials. With respect, I say NO. That is a dangerous path, and here’s why:

*1. IT'S NOT "FREE SPEECH" – IT'S A LICENSE FOR CHAOS*

Freedom of expression does not mean freedom to fabricate lies or hurl insults at leaders. If every citizen can insult and slander with impunity, we are not practising democracy – *we are rehearsing anarchy.* Today it's a politician, tomorrow it's a *chief* , *a judge* , or your *neighbour* . Where does it stop?

*2. DROPPING CHARGES = INTERFERENCE IN POLICE WORK*

The Police have a constitutional mandate to investigate and prosecute crimes *without external influence*. When a high-profile figure writes to ask for charges to be dropped, it sends a terrible signal – *that justice bends to power*. Whether the request is well-intentioned or not, it undermines the independence of our security agencies. Let the Police do their job!

*3. IF CHARGES ARE DROPPED, IT'S DISCRIMINATION*

Imagine another citizen insulted a different leader and was prosecuted. But this one walks free because the victim is "magnanimous"? That is selective justice. The law must be blind – *not kind to some and harsh to others*. You cannot have one rule for the connected and another for the ordinary person.

*4. THIS IS A CRIMINAL MATTER – THE STATE MUST CONTROL IT*

In criminal offences (and let's be honest, fabricating falsehoods against a public figure has criminal undertones), the victim is *NOT the prosecutor.* The State represents the people. If we allow the victim to decide whether to proceed, we are turning *criminal justice into a private negotiation*. That is not how a serious nation operates. The State must take charge.

*5.THE POLITICAL CAN OF WORMS*

If we normalise insults as "free speech," then what stops NPP and NDC supporters from trading daily abuses against each other's leaders? Soon, we will have a cycle of vendetta – *"you insult my flagbearer, I insult yours."* That is not politics; that is a street brawl. Our political space will become toxic, and we will all lose.

Social media is gradually becoming saturated with lots of lies and insults about leaders in our society. I think some young ones sometimes cross the lines when it comes to this freedom of speech. If something is not done today, at least to serve as a deterrent to the rest of them our society will be very difficult to run and manage tomorrow. When one calls a leader killer, that is not freedom of speech, that is a serious accusation. So personally I think the former vice President got it wrong for asking the police to let the young man go. If we let them go today, we can never control this trend tomorrow. Mark it. The social media must never be used as a yardstick to insult and malign the integrity of people without proof. That will not be healthy for our democracy.

Lets check it somewhere before it gets out of hand.

If you want the judiciary to work on your behalf then you have to sue the guy. The case the security is following now is a public case or criminal case and not a civil one so even you don't have any control so you can't sat anything that will work.
