The architectural design of Unity Hall, on the campus of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has won the admiration of many.

However, many have wondered who really is behind the design which draws comparisons with Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation, a modern residential building that combines high-density living with communal facilities in a “vertical garden city” concept.

This article introduces readers to Professor John Owusu Addo, the brain behind the iconic design of the residential facility.

Prof Addo is a distinguished architect with a career that has helped shaped the country's modern architectural landscape.

Affectionately known as “Prof”, he is celebrated for his contribution to architectural education and for his involvement in designing some of Ghana’s most recognisable buildings, including Unity Hall at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

Prof Addo was born on May 30, 1928, at Akwadum in the Eastern Region. He had his basic education at the Akwadum Methodist Basic School before proceeding to the Kumasi Wesley College Teacher Training College from 1944 to 1947.

After completing his four-year education at the teacher training college, he enrolled in Achimota Specialist Training College to study arts until 1950. It was during this time, that his interest in architecture grew.

He later went abroad to complete his architectural training, upon his return to Ghana in 1959, he joined the School of Architecture at the University of Science and Technology, now KNUST.

His return came at a significant time in the development of architectural education in Ghana.

KNUST flooding disrupts academic activities, students left stranded

The country was building its professional capacity and creating institutions that could train architects to respond to its changing needs.

One of the most prominent buildings associated with Owusu Addo’s career is Unity Hall at KNUST.

The hall, completed in 1963, is a major example of modernist architecture in Ghana.

Its two nine-storey blocks accommodate hundreds of students, while its layout reflects an approach to communal living that was gaining attention in modern architecture.

Its innovative approach to high-density housing, integration of communal facilities, and use of raw concrete set a precedent for modern residential architecture worldwide.

Unity Hall brought together ideas about high-density accommodation, shared spaces and ventilation, adapted to the university’s needs and the local climate.

Over the years, the building has become one of KNUST’s most recognisable landmarks, earning a place in the university’s identity beyond its original function as student accommodation.

Prof Addo’s contribution to Ghanaian architecture extends beyond prominent institutional structures.

His work also explored housing solutions that considered the needs of Ghanaian families and the realities of everyday life.
