The most annoying aspect of this is John Mahama appointee(DCE of Aburi) even had the effrontery to go and cut down trees which have been there for over 200yrs.Ghana is doomed no good leaders

Injecting Nkrumah;s name anytime an issue is raised will not bring CPP to power and reflects the slave mentality that without one person we are doomed. before Nkrumah's great great grandmother was born, we as a people were organized. We traded across Africa, we wen to school, we fought an defeated the Europeans etc etc

Don't you sometimes get tired of your simplistic Nkrumahization of everything? It is as if we were a paradise from 1952 to 1966 and all collapsed on 25th February!

struggling with the consequences of that ever since

However, all we get on SIL is Nkrumah Nkrumah etc etc. I once read on SIL that the great Osibisa band led by Teddy Osei formed because Nkrumah was overthrown. This is ridiculous as Teddy and his late brother Tontoh are UP diehards and actually disliked the CPP!

I have harbored similar sentiments over the past several years about Aburi Gardens, since I have made it my sanctuary whenever I visit Ghana. primarily because of the climate and tranquil nature of the mountain resort, in comparison to the capital and its environs.

I still dream of the place as my only escape from the jungles of Accra. Nonetheless, the lackadaisical attitude of the current inhabitants depicts the sad predictability of the black race.

God placed us here on earth among fellow humans to destroy nature. It happens everywhere you go on earth. Yes with a few of you and I scared around the world, we give blackness hope.

Sad to say, but I will be back there soon. Just to inhale, and watch the lazy men and women simply live off the earth and pray to God and Government to transform their sorry .......!

The first pricnipal was appointed in 1949 and arrived in the gold COast in 1950. The sod was cut on January 6th 1951 and nkrumah came out of prison in February 1951. Everything was in place - the budget, staff and the plan to make it into a University in 10 years

TO this day the CPP claim it was Nkrumah who built Tech!

NDC&NPP are partners in crime, Aburi Gardens is a national disgrace, tha roads inside and around the gardens are terrible, there's no flag on the flagpole, the housing is a mess, government workers are residing in renovated chalets, while visitors are expected to rent filthy rooms, the main building is crumbling, the signs that identify the trees are unreadable, how can anyone do research when they don't know what they are looking at?

Nana and Mahama put together does not represent a complete President, both NDC&NPP politicians are building mansions in the areas around Aburi, Kufuor's mansion is being built directly opposite Peduase lodge, don't tell me that he doesn't know the deplorable conditions that exist at the Gardens.

Politicians no longer visit Aburi gardens partly because of embarrassment, and they are also afraid that the people will Insult them, I pity the folks who support these two nation wrecking parties.

We have a bad maintenance culture which has been worsened by over politicization of government properties. Whoever is de MP fr de area must WAKE UP now. This was one of de famous tourist attractions in 30yrs back

Very sad indeed the pictures send through the memory lane. I schooled at the great Presbyterian Boys' Boarding School from 1958 to 1960 and came back to the town in 1978 to 1980 to teach at the then Presbyterian Women's Training College. I am recounting these experiences to register the nostalgia on seeing the pictures and sadness I feeling as I write this article.

Let me recount how as boys we will wake up at the sound of that piece of rail line that was used to sound the waking bell in front of House Two. We will jump out of our beds and run through the narrow road on eastern side of Gardens to the town and precisely to the stream near Jamaicaso to fetch water.

Along the route we will be looking for dropped coconuts of its trees that lined the road planted in the Gardens. On Sundays, in our white trousers with blazers and tie to march, black Bata shoes with "protectors" making noise as we march under the watchful eyes of the seniors through the Gardens to the Presbyterian Church in the town to worship.

The pictures send me way way back to those years. The lawns were immaculately mowed, perenial flowers lining the royal palms trees with all colours. My confirmation picture which I still keep was taken front of the main building opposite the Silk Cotton.

I am not sure how those surviving boys then and now and how they would feel reading this piece. Then I left for Secondary School to re-emerge in the town to teach in the Training College later.

As I was not married, I easily accepted an arrangement where I surrendered my rent subsidy and was provided with one of the Chalets as my accommodation. I virtually lived there for two years. Walking through in morning for classes is like yesterday to me now.

By jove, the serenity in the mornings, late evening taking a promenade through the Gardens is fresh in my mind. The Curator then was Mr Gbgobgo with Ansah as his assistant. The beer on Saturdays at the Rose Plot Cafeteria is fresh in my memory.

I have been through a memory lane. Shall we say a little prayer for those in charge to have mercy and revitalise the Gardens.

It would have to involve many playmakers,including ; Parks & Gardens, the traditional council, DCE for the area, MP for area, Regional Minister, etc. Let us not rule out privatization if that could correct and restore the glorious state of Aburi Gardens. Let us stop the insults and get to work, people. " Yen ara asase ni" People!!!!!. Stop the insults, people & lets get something done.

When we had our yearly Eastern Regional Athletic competitions, I clearly remember when my school's athletic team used to board at Aburi Teacher's College right across from Aburi Girls where my girl friend schooled at in the very early 70s. High Gifty I still miss you. Those days, it was a dream to just pass through Aburi let alone sleeping there. The garden of Eden now turned into an eyesore so destitute for want and attention and getting none. The Botanical Garden was a national institution whose praises was sang as far north as Bawku by class 1 school children. What has become of the legacies and monuments our fathers left us? I feel for our children. I know they will hear of them but can't and will not see the beauty of the old Ghana as we know and lived it. Come on, there are some super rich folks in the Aburi area and Ghana who should, and can extend an olive branch to restore this forgotten once beautiful landscape. Don't dwell on the government to do this coz every penny donated through them will be chop chop money. I just can't believe these pictures of our once jealously guarded paradise. Shame on all who had the opportunity to keep and restore but pocketed the funds.

RATHER, THE SO CALLED EDUCATED PEOPLE APPOINTED TO POSITIONS AT THE PUBLIC SECTOR, AGENCIES AND INSTITUTIONS ARE THE VERY ONES WHO CONTINUE TO MANIPULATE GOVERNMENT REVENUES ACQUIRED FROM EXPORT AND LOCAL TAXES FOR THEIR EXTRAVAGANT LIFESTYLES IN THE COUNTRY.

YOU MIGHT HAVE WITNESSED RECENT STEALING SPREE AT THE NSS AND LOTTERY, ETC, ETC.

HOW CAN A NATION EVER BE IN THE POSITION TO SURVIVE FOR EEVEN A DAY WHEN ITS PEOPLE STEAL THE RESOURCES OF THE NATION MEANT FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE NATION.

IT IS INDEED A SAD AFFAIR WHICH NOTHING CAN JUSTIFY IT.

PLEASE, TRY TO SEND COPPIES OF THESE PICTURES TO THE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENNT AND HIS ECONOMIC ADVISERS AT THE FLAGSTAFF HOUSE FOR THEIR NECESSARY INFORMATION AND ATTENTION.

WHAT IS EVEN PATHETIC IS,THESE PUBLIC OFFICIALS ARE ONLY INTERESTED TO RIDE IN IMPORTED EXPENSIVE AND LUXURY JEEPS AND CARS IN THE MIDST OF POVERTY.

GHANAIANS NEED TO KNOW THAT, the PRESIDENT CANNOT ALONE SOLVE THE MANY CHALLENGES AND DIFFICULTUES FACING THE NATION.

IT SHOULD BE COLLECTIVE EFFORTS OF ALL GENUINE GHANAIANS AND FOR THEM TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION AND TO MAKE GHANA A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE.

Here we are agaian blaming the present government for the poor conditions of the Auri gardens.As any person can tell from the conditions of the buildings,gardens paths and lanes etc.,the Aburi gardens have been neglected for many years and alas, we are lucky that the gardens are still existing as national pride and assetts.As the late president Attah-Mills and the NDC goverment including president Mahama did in their first four years in government by completing the dusty roads and fly-overs and the other infra-structure left by Kufuor and NPP government including Nana Akufo-Addow and Alan Kyeremateng.With this record and good example I am sure by reviewing the bad conditions of Aburi the present govern will have to paint repair the doors and windows,clear the lanes and parks to attract tourism and hospitality which will pay for the money spent for the repairs.Already Ghana has been brought backwards more than fivety years back by destroying railway network of the country and the Ghana Black star shipping lines with all Ghanaian captains,engineers,stewards and sailors during Afrifah,Busia and Acheampong era, and finally,the selling of Ghana Airways and the Ghana Telecommunications by Kufuor and NPP government.With these records,should Ghana ever allow the NPP rule Ghana again when the late Dr.Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP obtained the Independence the only buildings the left by the colonialist were the Osu castle for the then governor of the Gold Coast and the high courts but after the independence Nkrumah built all the infra-structures,established and built the ministries and estate houses for workers,built the Tema township and the harbour for the nation,bought shipping fleets with trained Ghanaian personels,ESTABLISHED Ghana Airways with trained Ghanaian pilots,engineers,air hostesses and stewarders.He and the CPP goverment improved the raiway network and the Ghana tellecommunications.But to-day the only transportation in the country is by roads only when all these national assetts provided by Dr.Nkrumah took him only nine years (1957-19660) in government to provide and compete any advanced nation.But to-day the same NPP are shouting to come to power to sell off our unversities,hospitals,habours and not to mention scramble for the oil and fill their pockets with impunity.Even Professor Boahene, the founder of NPP will curse these corrupt and greedy opportunites in his grave.May God forbid and long live Ghana.

I was an education officer in the gardens from 1998-2000 when I resigned to join the media bcos the management, under George owusu Afriyie, was not ready to help make the gardens productive! He hid under political colours to destroy this important treasure, which is capable of providing credible resources for food, medicine, clothing, shelter, fuel and many basic necessities! Aburi Gardens was established by the colonial govt in March 1890 on 160 acre of land! The current director of parks and gardens and the curator are two old men with good knowledge in plants, but clueless about modern trends of management cos many companies and international organizations will be happy to construct garden chairs, renovate and paint so they can advertise in return! Fan milk can easily provide trashcans with their logos on it so the place will be cleaner: and the old ladies who spend all the day sweeping can use that time to propagate more plants and learn new propagation techniques which will be useful for them even in retirement! The bush house can also be used for drum learning center, among others! In fact, Aburi Gardens is capable of providing a credible and innovative solutions to our socioeconomic woes!!

Could the management of the Botanical garden even remember the last day maintenance of the buildings took place? I hope the entrance fee does not go into the pocket of the management.

Ghanains can forget about nation-building, for the various leaders that have run Ghana since Nkrumah's departure have been or currently are crooks, thieves, looters, visionless, and very inept. While party supporters are busy fighting amongst themselves and not paying attention to things that matter, the crooked politicians and their cronies have been having a field day stealing and looting the country's resources. When not busy stealing, their shear incompetence at governing has caused Ghana to retrogress beyond comprehension. Unfortunately, the desease of the politicians has spread far and wide and has now engulfed the ordinary Ghanaian as well.
