We have been in this country when the uncompleted extension of the runway of Kumasi Regional Airport has been described by the Mahama NDC gov't as an ultra modern international airport comparable to any international airport in the US, Germany, France, UK, Holland, China, Hong Kong, etc, etc. So what does the Mahama NDC gov't means by an ultra modern Kumasi central market because Ghanaians have had it with mediocre leadership and propaganda.

I would be interested to know what the term 'political stability' means to him. Does political stability exist anywhere at all? Isnt it just a term that former colonial dictators and imperialists employ to patronize the inept leaders of their former colonies with to make them stay in line for their favours and crumbs? I presume that you Arkhurst also thinks that Mobutu Sese Sekos massively successful kleptocracy in Zaire that prevailed for several decades, also achieved 'political stability' for the much tyrannized and impoverished people of Zaire (DRC) whilst it lasted. When Mobutu's term of 'political stability' expired after around 30 years, what did the world see? What a damned fool you are! Some of you people go to school for absolutely nothing.

And listen to your stupid pathetic patronizing self. "The way to deal with corruption is to change the mind set of the people from the top to the bottom. If govts are unable or unwilling to tackle the problem then they will be voted out of office and that is as it should be". It seems that for some of you mentally disoriented people, the process of voting for the mere sake of voting only, is much more satisfying and important to you than the urgent and outstanding need for Africa to develop by all possible means.

If I may ask you, who is it who is going to, as you say, ".. change the mindset of the people from the top to the bottom" and if so, how can this be done?

Then again, and against the grain of common-sense, what you are suggesting is that, the people should continue to keep on voting for an endless series of incompetent and utterly corrupt gangsters posing as politicians whilst they the people and voters continue to get poorer and poorer and ultimately perish from some poverty related disease or circumstance? Are you normal? Do you live in this world? Political stability indeed!

Not surprisingly, it is only when we have daft, criminal-minded and obtuse leaders in govt that we begin to hear your colonial dictators describing our countries as havens of peace, tranquility and stability.

On the contrary, it is only when we have strong nationalist leaders who protect our sovereignty and our natural resources to our benefit, that they - and numbskulls like you, describe our countries as unstable and then even go to the extent of subverting our economies and govts. Unlike previously when the Army only had to seize the Castle and GBC and cow Ghanaians into submission, military coup in Ghana now will be hard to execute.

The Army can seize the GBC but with plenty of Radio stations available, those opposed to the military can also go to the other radio stations dotted around the landscape to disrupt and foul any military coup and Ghanaians will rather have a bad government and their freedom of speech to any military regime that will trample on our rights.

Military intervention globally is now out of fashion but particularly in Ghana. Ghana is no longer the country that a few soldiers seized GBC and announce the overthrow of the government and everyone keep quiet. This time, they will have to seize all the private radio and television stations in order to succeed. Ghanaians are less likely to accept another military intervention, though some may be happy for their selfish reasons.

In any case, who told Effah-Dartey that the military is capable of dealing effectively with corruption in Ghana? They are more corrupt than politicians. They are also not that efficient when it comes to the management of the affairs of the state. Then, the military is more likely to abuse the rights of citizens, etc. For these and others reasons, multi-party democracy, whether corrupt or not is far better than military dictatorship. It is unfortunate that Rainbow Radio gave him the platform to talk such nonsense.

The military are NOT fit to rule with their curfews and "buga buga" laws. We are grown past the stone age of military dictatorship.

Civilian/party democracy may not be perfect BUT it is way better than a group of soldiers taking guns to truncate the voice of the people.

I don't know how old you are but I have lived through Ghana's history, from independence till date and I bet you Ghanaians are enjoying so much freedom now than in any time in her history. Two wrongs don't make a right, and it is far better to have a civilian government to having a military dictatorship.

The pervasive corruption and plain thievery from national coffers, the refusal to reduce fuel prices in spite of the virtual collapse of crude oil prices on the world market, the over-taxation of Ghanaians, the resultant harsh living conditions in the country, and the "Yentie obia" dances at high places are all recipes for violent upheavals of the kind our country witnessed in 1979. If a compatriot draws attention to this danger we must listen and try to initiate corrective measures instead of heaping insults on him. It is wholly irresponsible for anyone, let alone a politician to even suggest that the military might intervene in the country's governance. The military has no, repeat, NO POLITICAL MANDATE and their record (including that of JJ Rawlings) has shown without any doubt that they cannot, and will not end corruption in Ghana.

Rawlings by now should have learned his own lesson that either as a military leader or civilian, you cannot solve the problem of corruption by simply having people with the barrel of the gun at your head. When Dr Limann, president of the 3rd republic in a brilliant interview in January 1981 lamented the extent and dangers of corruption, he suggested that this was a matter which started from our homes, the work place etc. and one that needed us the essentially win hearts and minds in order to deal with. In other words, the moral imperative is central to fighting corruption in all its forms from the church to the street.

There is something else that is currently going on in Ghana which is particularly worrying for me - the PERCEPTION OF CORRUPTION brandished about by politicians partly as a way of distracting the current government from its agenda and more importantly, creating the impression that the situation has gotten worse from what it was before.

I have serious doubts as to whether the 'barometer of corruption' has gone up by any significant notch from where it was the last time. If anything, I would hypothesise that the public awareness, and attempts by the good people of Ghana to expose it in all its forms is helping to stem the tide of corruption.

Our actions, utterances, accusations and general propaganda about the extent of corruption and the impression created in some quarters that somehow the government is either not interested in, or incapable of fighting corruption has serious negative consequences on our perception as a nation for inward investment and if this is the aim of those who wish to propagate this type of picture of Ghana, I would say that they have succeeded to some extent.

The truth of the nature and extent of corruption however needs to be measured against the overall good and the positive efforts being made by not just government but genuine sections of Ghanaian civil society and our religious bodies to help deal with the situation.

It is good to expose what is not good in our society. It is good to talk about everything bad and to suggest ways of tackling the problems. It is good to get involved in helping to find those indulging in corrupt practices and bringing them to book.

What is bad is trying to create the impression that it is now 'free for all' and the system has broken down beyond repair. Worse still is the notion that somehow things have so broken down that it is the military who may now have an appetite for intervention or that somehow they are entitled to doing so.

Nothing could be further from the truth, now is it an offence for the military to attempt to usurp power in our democratic dispensation.

As we have seen in Egypt recently and also in far flung places like Thailand, when people agitate for the military to take over, everyone loses in the end and apart from their draconian decrees and misrule, they end up amplifying the very corruption that we think they are best fit to lead the fight against.

We deceive ourselves when we think that the military has any answer to our problems. They do not, and are mot trained in governance, nor are they equipped with the right human capacity to run a region, let alone a country. We also know that even if the military takes over, years later they will be forced to hand over power and then what? As was shown by Rawlings' nearly 20 years in power, it makes no sense to think that a military ruler (however much force they use) can tackle corruption in our society.

I simply refused to be bribed, to be influenced in any way in my work. If we all adopt that approach and expose those who try to influence things in the wrong way, we will be on the way to improving our situation. We also need to go back to The Pledge and step up in the schools, teaching Civics to the current and future generations. Let us go back to the fundamentals of human decency, teach and insist that good behaviour be observed, and reward and punish as is needed.

As for Effah-Dartey, I cannot see him as a leader in our country. That he ever was made a minister of state is a disgrace to our country. Such persons are not fit to be involved in our politics, let alone occupy positions of authority. In some other places, such irresponsible utterances and writings would have been sanctioned at least by his party, and they would have distanced themselves from his comments and such notions.

I would hope and expect all political parties to come out and condemn these irresponsible statements and thoughts from Effah dartey and for him to be warned. If he has any friends in the military who might be contemplating the nonsense that he is suggesting, let them know that were they to try 'taking over' the country, Ghanaians will simply stay at home and refuse to work until they have abandoned their actions and run away.

Such gross irresponsibility and absolute nonsense from Effah-Dartey. He is a disgrace to politics and to the military that he came out of.

A military government is tantamount to an illegitimate civilian government in disguise.Because the deeply-sunk politically-ignorant soldiers CANNOT function without their disgruntled and sycophantic confederates in treason.Majority of them being university professors who are supposed to know better by virtue of their respectable academic climb.The likes of the Ahwoi brothers,the Tsikata brothers and Dr.
Kwesi Botchwey who couched Jerry Rawlings to wreck havoc on innocent Ghanaians.Leaving many women childless among women,chasing away the J.K.Siaws who have toiled feverishly to build their businesses,compelling brave men

The panacea for the threatening corruption does not lie in a military government.If it did,after murdering the army officers and others,there would not have been an iota of corruption in Ghana.
To effectively combat inflation,we need to uproot Dr.Kwame Nkrumah's socialist economic system and privatize the state-owned enterprises,reduce the size of the public sector,strengthen law enforcement and make the judicial system responsive to the corrupt system.
The lawyer was at the given end of the equation,so has the least idea about how our ALUTAS forced Jerry Rawlings to return the country back to democratic rule.
We will not go through this political struggle again.
Since any mention of a coup points to political instability and wards off potential investment(domestic and foreign),the learned lawyer will be mindful of the word.
Our democracy has come to stay.Ghana cannot shuttle between military governments and civilian administration.If any soldier thinks they have pragmatic solutions to the corruption,they should resign and enter into politics.No more shortcut to riches like Jerry Rawlings has been given.

Such is the impetus that any nutty, rogue, adventurous military officer needs to attempt a coup. But the masses have long spoken to keep the democratic process for changing regimes. Effah-Dartey should not expect any easy way for him to be relevant in our politics.

If he believes in the Law degree he brags about or in Democracy, he must use the Constitution and the Courts to effect any change in Government in Ghana. Nothing bars him from using the Courts to force the Mahama administration to prosecute the corrupt members of his Government.

We don't want to go back to the primitive way of using potentially fatal means of politicking.

Any idea of a military set up in government really gets my goat, because of their history.The history of Ghana or Africa shows that military governments could be just as corrupt and incompetent like the civilian governments that they replace.But because they have arms no principled person will dare oppose their incompetence, and bigger than real life attitude. MILITARY GOVERNMENTS ARE A BAD IDEA FOR GHANA AND FOR AFRICA.People have such very short memory -- military governments and accountability do not go together. While I agree with all your comments, the inability or incompetence of the current government to listen to any form of advice, makes one wonder, if Ghanaians would not support any band of inept, half baked intellectuals who ended up in the army because they could neither get the necessary grades to enter School of Administration nor the Law faculty with us a few years back.

There will be a lot of support if some soldiers were to come in and hand over in 6 months after making the necessary constitutional changes that Ghanaians have been asking for that the recalcitrant politicians (irrespective of party) are reluctant to make, for example, all Ghanaians should be allowed to vote irrespective of whether they live overseas or not and be able to hold ministerial appointment whether or not they hold other citizenships.

Constitutional sanctions for corruption, removal of protections for presidents engaged in criminal activity, separation of Ministries of Justice and Atorney General offices, no new projects by incoming govts until on-going projects by exiting govts are completed, proportional representation, maybe the Police Services report into the Chief justice and not the Ministry of Interior etc. These are glaring things that need changing, that our current system is not addressing.

Another desparate and losing NPP politician trying to instigate military personnel to enagae in a coup. When the NPP realizes that it can't overcome its political opponents, it resorts to coup parlance, hoping that some within the military will buy into their diabolical agenda. This is precisely how the NPP's uncle, the UP, managed to use Afrifa as a conduit for a coup against the CPP government in 1966. Interesting that Effah-Dartey with his evil mind will even dare to ask Ghanaians to pray for the country. Every time the NPP peddlers of doom and falsehood open their mouths, they have nothing good to say about projects being undertaken by the government. Truth is, the NPP is pregnant with lies and deceptions. Effah-Dartey is doing nothing but spewing elephant-size lies.
