The problems we have today didn't start with Mahama, it started long ago in 1966 when Nkrumah was overthrown. I don’t mean there wasn't any problems during Nkrumah's presidency; in fact, he did sidestep his own budget in catastrophic expenditure that undermined him.

Rawlings could have been the hope - with the iron hands he had - to enforce strict discipline in Ghanaians but failed when he accepted democracy because the whole world was screaming the world. He simply couldn’t control those in his government who became thieves overnight and undermined everything every damn step of the way.

But it was Kufuor who worsened it all when he himself indulged very seriously in corruption and helped everyone else in his government. The unabashed old fool was more than a crook; he was a bandit class one. There was virtually no one in Kufuor’s government patriotic (Is there, has there ever even one true patriot among the politicians in Ghana?).

Once upon a time, when I was leaving Ghana in 1989 I said to my friends Ghana might NEVER achieve anything good in 30 years. We argued heatedly when at the time, I left GES because the leaders everywhere was corrupt and educational virtues and qualities have begun to wane and tumble. I was sorry because whenever I tried to challenge those leaders, they called me renegade and menaced me because I was the youngest.

Finally, what is wrong with us is being simply our race! The black race is useless, stupid, greedy, unintelligent, unobjective, perfunctory, indolent… WE have no conscience.

Will it ever be good? NO, never. Unless we change, which we can’t.

Vuvu, Ghanaians were corrupt during Nkrumah's time. Most of his ministers stole from the state. Papa Jerry also finally became corrupt with his sale of SOEs. So were his ministers. Kuffour and his people were no exceptions. Mills, not much that I know about but his people were dangerous too. Mahama and his people, the least said about them the better.

Secondly, citing application statistics are all KOOL, but where the hell are the corresponding approvals and denials, based on what REASONS for the applications? Just get good education at home and things might change for many. Going to other countries without any good skills is jumping from frying pan into fire, Joe.

See, most Africans are just seeking economic empowerment, something many can't find in their own countries and having seen myself the TOIL and SUFFERINGS of many “African illegal migrants", you would think that if they did the same type of jobs in their countries, they wouldn't be STAR gazing in some Lungulungu countries—whose GDP or per capita income are far less than what they're leaving behind in their own countries.

Lastly, but importantly, BLAME the African leaders and politicians for not thinking hard, working hard, not doing enough, not creating enough jobs and better conditions for the people, but Lo & Behold they’re doing overtime STEALING the meager resources that those poor countries have. Next time, however, just tell us how many of the applications have been approved or denied and the aftermath for the denials!!

Thanks Frank. These are not political refugees. Purely economic refugees. In that sense, there are Americans and Europeans that will seek refugee status in Ghana, and they do.

Why must a lot of people be crumped into a small room? These people get up in the morning go round trying to find jobs that are not there. They may get a few Marks from the “Arbietsamt” and go buy some German beer and some swine feet, prepare their fufu and enjoy. That is life! They go out to the clubs in the night to look for the German Girls! That is life! Meanwhile the German Authorities are preparing their Repatriation documents to return them to Ghana. This is no life!

Stay home and find something to do. You can create something right there in Ghana.

of course some ghanaians need to leave ghana if they can't abide by the culture and traditions of ghana. back in the day people left ghana because of political reasons though not all who left due to political reason were involved in politics with a blend of economical hardship. what we see today of people fleeing from ghana is no more political but economical and social refugees.

I have no love for NDC if you have seen my usual comments, but Ghanaians seeking Asylum has more to do with the strict immigration regime in these countries.

UK as an example is forever tightening its immigration laws for non EU migrants and is also actively seeking to deport those that are reported or who come into the country and overstay their visas.

A claim of asylum requires more processing and more consideration (i.e. you won't be deported as quickly) compared to those who simply come for economic opportunities/claim to overstay by "accident"

I still don't get why Ghanaians or Africans (who are not coming from seriously war torn countries like Syria where people are dying like rats) would come to countries just like the UK to do menial jobs and struggle.... constantly looking over your shoulder for immigration.

Ghanaians need to put in the effort back home because what will happen is that foreigners and diasporians will be the ones coming into enjoy and after decades abroad those who suddenly decide to come back thinking there saved pounds or dollars will help them suddenly find they cannot simply just pick up where they left.

There must be other reasons, such as child marriage, slavery, or gay rights, to name a mere 3 other possibilities.
