One of my friends made a statement that sound humorous but real in practice when you consider the attitude and conduct of the Ghanaian lawyer.He said lawyers in their training appear to be thought how to exploit,lie and steal.I fully agree that the hallmark of the average Ghanaian lawyer besides proudly displaying their professional apparel in court are confident trickery and subtle theft.In other words they are confident tricksters who take full advantage of faith repose in them by vulnerable but desperate clients to defraud them of huge sums of money.Most lawyers really subject their clients to serious maltreatment and abuse all in an attempt to exploit their unfortunate situation.The worse of inhuman atrocities committed by lawyers in this country is when they extort clients so much of money and subsequently connive against them by going in for juicy bribes from opponents.Once a lawyer have his palms oiled you see a sudden change in attitude where the unfortunate but desperate client is subject to abuse and insults.He will toss the client left and right,arbitrarily adjourn hearing until the case is spending decades in court.They resort to all sort of technicalities to confuse and kill the ignorant client's case in favour of opponents who pay huge bribes to them.This is a very common practice by lawyers particularly when the case involve high profile persons.In some cases involving the rich and powerful, lousy and incompetent lawyers use the clients case as a bait to make money with the elite paying huge sums in bribe as offenders to cover the case when lawyers approach them to tell them of the said case in their possession.Once the booty is in hand the dubious lawyer flee by resorting to rough tactics to frustrate and compel the client into submission by finding every bit of fault and excuse.A good example is a case involving a brother of mine sacked from the public service.The lawyer took 3 thousand ghana cedis from him though he was not working and was not on salary.He in fact sold properties to pay the lawyer.The lawyer dragged the case for 5 years by being at the best of so-called 'legal gymnastics' to use their own term.He resorted to insults,abuse,fault finding and literally avoided my brother until he was compel to give up.The worse aspect is that unscrupulous and criminal lawyers are usually a bad influence on the good ones on grounds of professional solidarity by demonizing and defaming clients they have defrauded and abandoned so that they never get justice that will in turn expose their diabolic,unprofessional,illegal and unethical conduct.Those corrupt high profile civil servants involving a Minister of State who persecuted and sacked my brother on very dubious grounds because of personal differences are forever protected by the singular act of a corrupt,heartless and dubious lawyer with my brother's case gagged up at the Human Rights Court to rot.Justice will forever elude the victim of injustice if lawyers who are supposed to be advocates and conduits for justice are themselves filthy unjust with the sole aim of using clients as cash cows instead of enuring justice as their professional obligation.
