Singapore was ruled by one man from the time it broke away from Malaysia for many years. Singapore did not have the type of democracy we are practising here in Ghana, even today the son of Lee Kuantan Yew is the president of Singapore. His father handed over to him. That is the history of Singapore. The western powers did not interfere in their affairs, and did not help overthrow Lee Kuan Yew. However, when Nkrumah introduced one party rule so that he could do what Yew was doing, the UP went to the Americans and got the CIA to help overthrow him. We are doomed as a country. The present system which allows a president only 4 years, with the possibility of a second term, will never give a leader with vision the chance to develop the country. Lee Kuan Yew and to some extent , Mahathir Mohammed of Malaysia operated more like dictators and did not tolerate the nonsense that goes on in African countries. The citizens of these two countries accepted the curtailment of so called freedoms, so that their countries can be developed. Are we prepared to do this in Ghana? . Never is the answer, so we should stop making the comparison. We blew our chance when we overthrew Nkrumah.
