Fufu in Ghana is a very bad food. This is the very food that has made a lot of Akans grow short and instead of tackling the menace some useless academicians are glorifying it by claiming Akans in general and Ashantis in particular are short people. I was once at a spiritual center and stayed in the same room with a young Ashanti who was born and bred in Canada. The guy is very tall, lean, energetic and had strong set of teeth but the parents were not. It was there and then I asked myself, are Ashantis really short? The fact is that fufu is carbohydrate and digestion of carbohydrates takes place in the mouth and so any carbohydrate which is swallowed hook, line and sinker will not digest thereby starving patrons of fufu the much needed energy they will need for 12 hours of their daily growing life. This could be good for the old but not the young and I believe fufu is a food for the old. Eventhough Nigerians, especially Igbos and Yorubas, eat fufu and grow taller, their version of fufu is hard and so they chew it for some time before swallowing, if not, the lafu or pounded yam could either choke them to death or cause corrosion in their oesophaguses . Akans are not the only culprits. In fact all those who eat Tuo Zafi and Konkonte also stand accussed. No wonder northerners of late have started experiencing charllenges in their growth. In my family, whenever the children eat fufu, I insist they chew it.

What prevents Otabil to sponsor one of the Departments in his University to undertake a forensic audit of the preparation of fufu and come out with an informed opinion and advice as to how to best prepare the delicacy in a hygienic way. This is the surest way Otabil can impact society instead of these one dimensional write-ups without any concrete scientic basis.

If he is so disgusted about the people who use their hands to eat, he can use the money he can use his ill-gotten wealth to supply cutlery set to his poor congregation who wish to use cutlery set but can't afford it. Our ancestors pounded fufu in the same 'unhygienic' mortar and with 'ebunu ebunu' soup with dry fish and 'mpunam', lived healthier and longer, with their 'almighty' BENTOA on standby in the event of any constipation.

My question to Dr. Otabil is whether he has a BENTOA in his mansion? If not, then he should acquire one, pray over it and use it frequently, so he will live long . Modern research has highly recommended BENTOA for good health.

Women use BENTOA more than men, that's why men die early. Dr. Otabil should preach also on the health benefits of BENTOA. King Solomon the wisest king used BENTOA, but he used the atmospheric BENTOA(bontuaeku) and not the modern suction BENTOA.

The same goes for fufu: once the pestle and the morter are cleaned and dried it's always good to go. One could use spoons, forks and knifes, but if they are not cleaned properly, bacteria will similarly contaminate them naturally.

Africans are not obligated to adapt to every so called "change" in human habit initiated by non-Africans. God did not create us to ALWAYS copy others, but not be copied by others. Environmental and cultural differences set peoples apart in unique way of approaching issues, and eating habits and choice of dish or food are no different.

For example, Italians are noted for their Spaghetti. Try and use your hand to eat spaghetti, and see if you can get a single thread into your mouth. The best alternative item is a fork. So, do we ditch our hands and go for spoon or fork to eat fufu or banku, because there is s change in eating habit for spaghetti eaters? No.

We forget that all these so called modern life is what is shorten our life now a days. Our fathers were eating their foodstuff raw,fresh with no fertilezer and pesticides till these agric these and that pop up from the same Europeans who don't have any good intentions for black man,we abandoned our organic foodstuffs and went after them what happened, now are lands and our crops are poisonous, the organic that we got for free that they deceived us to abandoned for more yield or hybrid crops,have become more expensive than the one they told us to go for and is only the rich who can buy (afford )it to the detriment of the poor and destitute who use to get it for free.
As if is not enough harm they are coming back with what they called MONSANTO WHO ARE COMING TO CONTROL OUR FOOD CHAIN IN THE WORLD AND YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT FUFU WHICH HAVE BEEN THERE FOR AGES.

But I do not agree with him on the question of fufu. Fufu is the most inexpensive and healthy meal for the family, especially, the ones who do not have much to spend to feed a large family. Pastor Otabil should be told that If the soup tastes nice there will certainly be finger licking. Most mortars and pestles are washed clean after they are used. And again, would be washed before it is used again. There may be some bacteria somewhere, but they may not be reason to kill when fufu is consumed. The hot soup which goes with fufu will take care of anything that may be harmful. I hope our medical people will agree with me. Yes, we have stucked to the method of preparing our fufu for centuries. However, there are now small machines that turn the cooked plantain or the other stuff into a ready to eat fufu. Also, there are powdered fufu on the market. What we might do as a nation, is to encourage research to further improve the processes of making fufu, both for large group consumption and in homes. Once done, the nation can cut back on imports of rice, which is about the leading food item for feeding, at parties and funerals also, at schools and colleges. Pastor Otabil may then be satisfied that we will not be killing ourselves by eating fufu. We will also have our way to enjoy the favourite meal for most Ghanaians.

People do things for its utility value. Have you tried to eat noodles with your fingers? Or string beans? Or Macaroni and Cheese? Quite impossible. It makes sense to eat food such as these with your cutlery.

When de Blasio was elected Mayor of New York City, he went out and ate pizza with a fork and knife. Perish the thought; he was blasted in an editorial by the New York Times.

One does NOT eat pizza with anything BUT the fingers. People in the USA eat many foods…hamburgers; pizza; French Fries; Fried Chicken; etc., etc. with their God-given fingers. In Mexico and the entire Latin America, much of the cuisine is eaten with fingers.

Fufu, Kenkey; TZ; and other Ghanaian foods of that genre are best eaten with the fingers. Anyone eating Banku; Fufu; Abetie with spoon is a total FOOL.

Our people never ate Koko; Mpampa; Nuhoo (Ntakye in Akuapem), etc., with their fingers because it’s just not comfortable. Therefore, our ancestors designed cutlery from bamboo and plantain covers to use them for eating those type of foods.

Otabil claims ‘PEOPLE CALL HIM A WHITE MAN.’ That is an appropriate description because he is pimping white ideas that have no meaning for his congregation. He is an anti-cultural African who tends to think that anything African is beyond useful in this day and age. That is totally wrong.

He once chided our Chiefs for riding in Palanquins when there are cars…. But the Queen of England still rides in Horse and Buggies in spite of her numerous Rolls Royces. Otabil must understand that there is something called CULTURE and the paraphernalia of tradition….notwithstanding ‘modernity.

Now, I have pounded a lot of Fufu in my life. My grandmother (again, may God and Nananom bless you Nana Abena Bio [Konama, m’ato wo ba din]) always made sure, the pestle and mortar were thoroughly cleaned BEFORE we ate out FUFU with our blessed hands. The chances of bacteria infecting these utensils are near zilch.

Contrast that with the modern kitchen. I have also worked in a restaurant kitchen in the USA. The filth in those kitchen restaurants is unspeakable. Also, the ‘stainless steel’ cutlery and utensils he prefers to eat with…are all carcinogen. Dupont will attest to that…!

I don’t begrudge Otabil for taking a vow not to eat fufu ever, because the preparation that goes into is tiresome. I am sure he enjoys his sausage and ‘nkyekyeewa.’ If only he ever visited a sausage factory, as the saying goes, he would never taste another sausage.

I am sure Pastor Otabil means the best for his congregation. He must stick to the Gospel; and leave dietary concerns to the qualified.

of the Farmers started to plant genetically produced Cassava Stick "Agric"as it was then called; which takes lesser months to mature. That's the reason Fufu get Spoiled within 15-20 minutes after preparation. Another example is the "Agric" Palm Oil (It's cholesterol and not good for your health- heart).Compare it to the local Palm Oil.Therefore, not all Scientifically improved food is better. It may be better with the time factor to Cook,etc,but lacks the original God made heathy nutrients to feed your metabolism . That is the sole reason authorities should listen to what the people say on GMO, not to force it on Ghana. Authorities should be warned in advance!.So,pathogenic microbes theory is neither here nor there, why Fufu Start to Spoil within minutes after preparation. The African has something good which some of you refuse to appreciate. Where's the Kontomere, Snails,Mushrooms, etc, and why? .

Fufu from cassava and plaintain and cocoyam have excellent mount of fibers and polysaccharides which has saved Africans from the many whiteman's diseases. A stomach specialist ( Gastroenterologist)travelled from Harvard medical school to Ghana to offer colonoscopy to Ghanaians and she was amazed how healthy our colon(intestines) looked even for the 70 yr old Ghanaian compared to a 30 yr old American who eats all those western foods refined , fast foods.
I live in USA with my family and you will be amazed how many times Americans stops us to praise out body size. You know our secret ? still eating the healthy African foods including gari with ground puts(pea nuts), fufu, banku, beans e.t.c.
Let us not throw away the few good stuff we have for the supposedly hyped western foods which is killing them in their numbers.

Thank God you are not asking for him to be stoned or killed for sharing his opinion on a favorite cultural delicacy. After all those in the bible did worse to the son of God who was without sin. How much more Dr. Otabil. What wrong did Jesus do? He only spoke the truth and was killed for it and the bible clearly states that many are the afflictions of the righteous.... Dr. Otabil is discerning and wise enough to understand this so he will quietly "bear his cross".
The terrible manner in which some of you have reacted to his speech only portrays how much turmoil and venom exists in your hearts. How can people in pain give joy and encouragement. We humbly pray for you: I'm sure Dr. Otabil forgives you. Whilst you keep criticizing he keeps moving from strength to strength teaching God's word!

Various types of Ghanaian made fufu machines are in the market. All you need is to dismantle and wash it well. No sweats and no bacteria wahala. You can find two types of Ghana made fufu machines at Afariwa near Ashaiman round about. I have been using this machine for more than a year commercially and for my private weekend fufu. I recommend it to anyone interested. It's made of a 6.5 horsepower gasoline engine that drives a shaft with helical cutting and grinding sleeves. While the helical grinder grinds it advances the mashed cassava onto a screen and the oversize are reground. I normally blend the fufu twice and with little dressing of it you are fully ready to enjoy sweet sweet fufu. Petrol consumption of the machine is very low. I am not saying you should try it. I have tried and ate its fufu for almost two years.

How scientific is this your claim, our great great grandparents are fufu and they lived for over 100 years, we generation of today eat fried rice and we die at 40years and you say that eating fufu is killing us, there may be some bad methods of preparing it, but it better than eating fried rice and chicken.

I am not afraid of what will kill me but wht I am afraid most is dying without the Holy Spirit of God in me because that is my ONE AND ONLY key to enter HIS KINGDOM- Eph 5:30. Is there statistics of people dying through FUFU consumption in Ghana or any part of Africa. The statement should not be an open statement by the learned Pastor he should enumerate solution to the alleged fatalities attributed to bacteria infections etc. Preaching salvation is quite important than FUFU consumption and related consequences. If what you're saying is true then some of us who have been eating "chop bar" fufu for God knows since when should be dead by now. Some of us have fufu for breakfast, lunch and supper.
There's nothing wrong with servants of God commenting on healthy living but please make sure you have your facts straight.

Most africans outside of their countries can cook any food bring to the job and eat in commonly in the dinning room with colleagues on the job and feel good and not think of who is watching how they eating but the kinds of fufu, eba, kenkey and ampesi. and few more. On mortar and pestle, i will call it ."SIMPLY HYGIENIC".I grew up to see how the mortar and the pestle are cleaned and nothing is left in the corners by using silver wire sponge. I agree fufu making in households is difficult task but most times is pounded by young and males and the ladies or women depending on your household size and availability. Who knows, may be doing so we gain something in keep fit.

Sometimes pride makes us go overboard and we loose proper focus and begin to dable into useless and unnecessary matters. In any case, this? does not warrant the vulgar languages being used by many. Yes, Otabil must equally be condenmed for these kinds of overboard talks but the gross abuses are uncalled for. That equally shows another side of backwardness! Many Ghanains are becoming so rough and disrespectful right from the top hierachees?. This is very bad and must be reduced. You don't have to use such abusive and degrading words to make your points to disagree and condenm a misleading and proud brother. Why so much hatred, bitterness and prejudice??
