Labour expert Austin Gamey has urged workers of Marwako Fast Food Limited to form a union that protects and sees to their welfare.

This comes on the back of a recent abuse of kitchen staffer Evelyn Boakye at the Abelenkpe branch of the eatery. Evelyn’s face was dipped into pepper paste by her Lebanese supervisor Jihad Chaaban.

This inhumane treatment has attracted widespread criticism, especially on social media, leading to the creation of a hashtag #boycottMarwako.

Management of the restaurant has since suspended the supervisor until police conclude investigations into the matter.

But speaking to Class News, Mr Gamey believed the formation of a union would give voice to the workers and prevent future abuses.

He said: “So far, from all that I have heard, it appears to me they don’t have a local union because this is some kind of a Lebanese company and I don’t think they have permitted people to have a union there, so the workers may not have the courage to do it.

“The labour unions themselves are sometimes docile and not able to go and organise people in these kinds of places… I think, going forward, the workers should take an advantage of the situation now and if they can’t go to the TUC, form their own internal union as well.”
