Takoradi, July 6 GNA - Mr George Amihere Naykene, Branch Chairman of the Public Services Workers Union (PSWU) has said the decision by the leadership of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) to disaffiliate from the Trades Union Congress (TUC) is a setback for the Ghanaian worker.
He said the union, since its establishment, had aimed at uniting workers in the country.
Mr Naykene was speaking to newsmen on the effects of the ICU decision on the labour front at Takoradi on Monday.
He said the ICU leadership should take a second look at its decision, since its mandate rested with members at the local, divisions, branches and regional levels.
"This mandate should not be overlooked because all decisions taken on behalf of the members must be broad-based".
He called on the leadership of the ICU to use its negotiating skills to find a lasting solution to the impasse.
"Any hasty decision, could spell doom for the leadership and members of the ICU".
Mr. Naykene stressed that the mediation role and bargaining power entrusted to the ICU leadership by workers should be safeguarded and workers' interests should be paramount to personal interests.
"The TUC has suffered several times for workers and that they should be united to ensure the successful implementation of the new Labour Act ", he stressed.
