Kwesi Appiah runs the rule over Ghana new boys

The Black Stars coach rates his new players after the end of the World Cup qualifying.

Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah is largely impressed by the level of performance of newly-introduced players in the Black Stars.

Since taking over as Ghana boss in May, Appiah has embarked on a rebuilding exercise, dumping many of the 'old guards' for fresh talent as he seeks to introduce competition in the national outfit.

Aalesund winger Edwin Gyasi, Nana Ampomah, Godfred Donsah and Kasim Adams Nuhu are some of the names to have featured on the Black Stars roster under the 57-year-old.

“Ten out of the 16 new players we gave chances have proved they can play for Black Stars," Appiah told Nhyira FM.

"I don’t want to mention names but Ghanaians are good judges.

“We shouldn’t have that thinking of using a template squad if we want to undergo a team building exercise because there wouldn’t be any competition in the team.

"As a coach, competition is very good because you are certain about the players qualities when you give them chance [to prove themselves].”

West Ham star Andre Ayew and kid brother Jordan, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Razak Brimah, Jonathan Mensah, John Boye and Afriyie Acquah are among the 'big boys' to have missed out on call-ups in the last selection.

The Black Stars, who were held by Egypt to a 1-1 draw in 2018 World Cup qualifying on Sunday, return to action in March next year against Kenya in 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying.
