L-R: Football coaches Otto Addo, Carlos Queiroz and sports journalist Dan Kwaku Yeboah
Ghanaian sports journalist, Dan Kwaku Yeboah has criticised the appointment of Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz to lead the Black Stars to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to him, despite Queiroz’s vast experience at World Cup tournaments, his record has been unimpressive, with his highest achievement being the Round of 16.
Speaking on Peace FM, Kwaku Yeboah argued that, based on records, there is no difference between Queiroz and former Black Stars coach Otto Addo.
7 facts you must know about new Black Stars coach Carlos Queiroz
“The World Cup, the highest stage he has reached, is the Round of 16, and that includes his own country, Portugal, where he had Ronaldo. In his 20-year World Cup record, he has won 4 of 16 matches. So, is there a difference between his record and Otto Addo’s in Qatar?
"We should stop using past glory to glorify certain things. I am surprised people are hailing him. He is experienced, alright, but he has outlived his glory days,” he said in Twi.
The Peace FM sports journalist further raised concerns about Queiroz’s age and competency, questioning how he could adequately prepare the team for the World Cup given the limited time available.
“The oldest coach at the World Cup is Hugo Broos, who is 74, and he was signed by South Africa five years ago when he was in his 60s. If he were 73, they would not have signed him. We now have the second-oldest man, but his record is not good. They want someone they can control. How is he going to prepare the team to win the World Cup?” he asked.
