The Accra Sports Stadium hosted some of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers
The Accra Sports Stadium is once again under the spotlight, not for footballing drama, but for how its playing surface has stood up to nature's test.
The facility has already hosted over 100 matches since the final AFCON qualifiers in late 2024, followed by the intense opening stages of the final round of World Cup qualifiers from March 2025.
That relentless schedule has left the turf with little time to fully recover, despite it being designed for roughly 40 matches per season.
After days of heavy rainfall swept across Accra, concerns were raised about possible damage to the pitch. However, a visit by the Director General of the National Sports Authority, Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, painted a more reassuring picture.

Walking on the surface and inspecting the drainage response, he struck a pragmatic tone about the situation.
“It’s not a potato field. It rained heavily for hours; that’s nature. There’s not much the NSA can do about that. It’s important to have the reality on the ground and hopefully the pitch will stay in shape,” he said.
Despite the downpour, the pitch remains in a workable condition, holding up better than many expected under the circumstances. While not perfect, it continues to do its job as Ghana's football calendar pushes on.
