I still don't understand why I was sacked — Otto Addo

Former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has admitted he is still puzzled by his dismissal from the Ghana national team, insisting he has never been given a clear explanation for his departure.

Addo was relieved of his duties in March 2026, just days after Ghana suffered defeats to Austria and Germany in international friendlies as part of their preparations for the FIFA World Cup. The Ghana Football Association subsequently appointed Carlos Queiroz as his successor.

Speaking to German outlet Fußball, the 51-year-old reflected on the decision that ended his second spell in charge of the Black Stars, saying he remains uncertain about what led to his exit.

“I still, to this day, haven’t understood the reason. The expectations from our federation president were simply too high,” he said.

Addo's dismissal came despite guiding Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars booked their place after finishing top of their qualifying group.

His departure generated mixed reactions among Ghanaian football fans, with some arguing that the GFA acted too hastily given his success in securing World Cup qualification, while others pointed to the team's inconsistent performances and defensive struggles in the friendly defeats.

The former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach first managed Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup before returning for a second spell after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
