Fights, High Ticket Prices, and More: Parent's open letter to FIFA goes viral

A parent from The Redcard Initiative has written an open letter to FIFA President Gianni Infantino, raising concerns about chaotic incidents during the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The individual explained that, as someone whose son plays football, affording the exorbitant ticket prices for his child to witness the tournament was a major challenge.

He also criticized the reversal of United States forward Florian Balogun’s red card after intervention by President Donald Trump, as well as the chaotic scenes in the World Cup final, describing them as a bad example for children.

“My son plays football. Every Saturday, he steps onto the pitch because he loves the game. As a new football season begins for millions of young players around the world, I have three questions I simply cannot answer. Maybe you can. How was I supposed to take my son to a World Cup game with ticket prices like these?

"How do I explain to him that a player gets a red card, a head of state calls the FIFA President, and suddenly that player can play the next game? How do I explain to him that some of the players he is supposed to look up to can end a World Cup final fighting, in front of millions of children watching, and will probably still be back on the pitch as if little happened? Millions of young players around the world watched that final,” portions of the letter read.

The parent condemned the unfortunate incidents of the 2026 World Cup and urged FIFA to provide answers, stressing that such actions are not exemplary.

He concluded that FIFA deserves “the red card” this time around for its inaction and poor organizational decisions.

“They watched their heroes. Every weekend, parents and coaches teach them to respect the referee, accept decisions, control themselves, and respect their opponents. The World Cup is supposed to be the greatest example of those values. Instead, parents and coaches are left trying to explain why the examples children see at the very top of football seem to follow different rules. So tell us, Infantino: How are we supposed to explain that to our children? Maybe this time, the red card shouldn’t go to a player. I look forward to your response, Infantino.
