President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is bringing the country to its knees with the number of ministers he has appointed to help him govern, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said.

According to him, Mr Akufo-Addo, a few months ago as presidential candidate, claimed the then NDC government had plunged the Ghanaian economy into a ditch leading people to believe he would run a moderate government but that has not been the case.

He said if the claims by the New Patriotic Party administration that the erstwhile NDC government left behind an economy in tatters, then the size of Mr Akufo-Addo’s government will simply collapse it.

The president has appointed 110 ministers to help him govern the country for the next four years. However, the president has suffered a backlash from a section of the Ghanaian public over the number of ministers.

Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Thursday 16 March, Mr Asiedu Nketia said: “The president, when campaigning, told us that he was going to do things that had never happened before in the country, so I am not surprised at the size of his government.”

“We were told by him that the economy was in bad shape and so he was coming to fix it. How could someone who claimed that the economy was facing challenges appoint such number of ministers? Let me make this point that whenever you see that a shop is on the verge of collapse, you will normally realise that the goods being sold are far less than the number of workers. You will see that 20 sales attendants are selling 10 sardines and that is what President Akufo-Addo is doing to this country.

“It appears the ministers are now more than the technocrats who do the actual work in the country, and if we are going to spend a huge amount of money on ministers of state instead of dealing with the core issues affecting the country, then it means they are collapsing the country.”
