The main opposition NDC wants President Akufo-Addo to decide the fate of the Acting IGP as the country heads to the 2020 general elections.

“It’s dangerous for any country to go into major elections with an Acting IGP in-charge of security” the NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah told Kasapa 102.5 Fm.

He added:”With the thinking that he could be removed in a day, he won’t have the confidence to take charge in security matters in the run-up to elections.”

President Akufo-Addo has asked the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Mr. James Oppong-Boanuh, to act as IGP until a substantive IGP is appointed.

The substantive IGP David Asante-Apeatu was on Monday, 22 July 2019 relieved of his post.

Mr. Asante-Apeatu has proceeded on leave with immediate effect, pending his retirement from the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, 14th August, 2019.

He is due to retire from the Ghana Police Service on Wednesday, 14th August, 2019.

“The President thanked him for his many years of service to the country, and wished him well in his retirement,” director of communication at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin said in a Press Statement.

Oppong-Boanuh was granted a one-year contract extension last year October following his retirement. Until his appointment, Mr Oppong-Buanuh was the Director-General of Administration.

Meanwhile, Mr Asiedu Nketiah has told Kasapa 102.5 Fm, the Acting IGP, James Oppong-Boanuh will suffer the same fate as his predecessor in his new office.

“The political machinations has been the problem of our professional Policemen to work effectively. The way I know Oppong-Boanuh if he set himself to work very well, he can but I doubt it because I can predict that what Appietu went through he would suffer the same thing,” he told host Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5.
