Senior minister-designate, Yaw Osafo-Maafo has confessed that Ghana’s economy is “fundamentally strong” contrary to earlier assertions by the New Patriotic Party while in opposition that the economy was “broke”.

Osafo-Maafo made the confession statement while answering questions before the vetting committee of Parliament Friday.

The former Finance Minister said the strength of Ghana’s economy rests with its ability to generate revenue from several sources. He said the country especially had several minerals and resources that were the envy of other nations.

Osafo-Maafo expressed confidence that the economy would support the fulfillment of the manifesto pledges of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

He, however, stressed the need for the government to manage the country’s resources efficiently in order to maximise their potential.

Osafo-Maafo’s pronouncement that the economy is strong directly contradicts assertions by Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia that the economy is in a bad shape.

“…we have looked at the economic situation, it is not an easy one, it is a very difficult one but by the grace of Allah we intend to keep all the promises that we made to the people of Ghana,” Bawumia said in Accra recently.
